WORDLE - anyone else trying the daily online word game?

I recently stumbled across WORDLE online.  For the uninitiated, it is a daily word guessing game where you have to try to guess the word in 6 or less tries.

https://www.powerlanguage.co.uk/wordle/

This, from Wikipedia, explains the game:

Every day, a five-letter word is chosen which players aim to guess within six tries. After every guess, each letter is marked as either green, yellow or gray: green indicates that letter is correct and in the correct position, yellow means it is in the answer but not in the right position, while gray indicates it is not in the answer at all. The game has a "hard mode" option, which requires players to include letters marked as green and yellow in subsequent guesses. The daily word is the same for everyone. The game also has a dark mode as well as a high-contrast theme for colourblind accessibility, which changes the color scheme from green and yellow to orange and blue.

This abc news story has some tips for playing:

https://www.abc.net.au/news/2022-01-26/why-wordle-has-become-a-new-online-obsession/100782794

I have found that most that most days I can get the daily word in 5 tries or less (mostly 5 though).  Interestingly, there is a spinoff of WORDLE called LEWDLE, where the words are lewd, or naughty, words.  I have better success with LEWDLE than I do with WORDLE . . . getting the word in just 2 or 3 attempts.  Not sure what that says about my private school education 🤣

The target thing is easy on an iPhone. The keyboard shows a smiley “key” and the whole shebang is available upon pressing that key.

On the computer, you could use the amp-what website and type in the word “target” to get that, ready for you to copy. You could even save some favorite emojis - Unicode characters -etc., in a Notepad file. (It should be saved as a UTF-8 or Unicode file, not just a text file.)

Or… copy the target from my post and save in a Notepad file as above.

Re the Octordle - yes, today your starter and eliminator were more helpful than mine; I went over the possibilities in my mind … but what sort of eliminator would have given me a clear path to 52? I can’t see it!

Today’s Octordle is much more co-operative.

I could guess the first word (2R) on the 2nd row. I could almost guess the next one (1L) after that, but I couldn’t be sure of the 4th letter, so I decided to use an eliminator.

TORCH 🎯
SPINY <- (I thought about using “spiky” as that would rule out shake as well as shape, but I thought overall “N” would be a better letter to send into battle)

I’m very pleased with this. I decided on exactly what I wanted to rule out or to confirm, and my eliminator was perfect (in my opinion).

I ended up with only one possible answer.

I went off course today, slightly.

alien/shown. I fancied this as it covered similar letters to shout but tested a pattern I thought might be likely. plus it could possibly have been the answer. Of course it wasn't. That sort of luck doesn't come along very often.
After the pattern was confirmed, I thought second letter would probably be R, but I was faced with F D G C B for first place.

I used fudgy. That eliminated all but the C & B.
I went for crown as the most likely. It wasn't. It was that sort of day. 😂

Now this octordle is one of life's mysteries, as far as I am concerned. I found it far trickier than yesterday's and played it badly. I was expecting a score well into the 60s. It went right to the end.

Spoiler
After my first turn, I suspected #8 was liner but I wasn't quite game to go for it. Couldn't see another alternative but that's the story of my life & I am often wrong, so I played safe and used shout in second place.
After that, I tried liner and for a while, all went well.

Then I made a mistake on #3 on the 8th turn. I tried apply and of course it was amply. I think I've been caught with that one in the past, actually.

But later...for some reason,  on #4, I was tossing up words such as broth, worth, torch, froth, troth and so i used an eliminator but the key thing is, I had not looked properly and after the eliminator, I thought.. broth, which was wrong. The key thing is that the T could not go in 4th position and I should have known that if I had double checked. I realised at the last minute on my final turn.

But how I got 57 after all those mistakes and going down to the wire, I do not know.

sorry guys, we had a 16 day window of no commitments, so we took off in the motorhome.  This week and next week are full on with medical appointments and new carpet being layed.  Christmas will seem like a breeze after that.

I'll try and get back to Wordling soon.

Well, I tried! 😂
alien/shout

That gave me i h t
My first thought was maybe a TH ending-so maybe mirth, girth, birth
But it could also be pitch, ditch, hitch, witch.
I didn't think the B would be a likely starter for this pattern.😁 But I was suspicious it could very well be hitch.
I used GRUMP as an eliminator and what a wash out that was, but at least it narrowed it down.
My next eliminator was hawed. I really wanted to test H in first place. It solved it, anyway,
at last!

Now this octordle was a nice, gentle one but it did have some pitfalls along the way for the unwary.

I took it carefully.

Spoiler
#4 had a lot of possibilities till I narrowed it down to a choice of 2 answers. I actually chose curvy over curry for #5 just to rule stave in or out. skate or stake were the last two choices I had left. I have been caught before. I always choose stake and the answer turns out to be skate so today I thought, ho ho, not this time, and went for skate. It was stake. 😒

And I have noticed a thing about myself. Sometimes I am inclined to choose words that have a K ending when they could also end in G, and I am never right. So for #6, I fancied clunk but went with clung.

# 7 I fancied spasm but at the last moment thought-swamp.
