WORDLE - anyone else trying the daily online word game?

I recently stumbled across WORDLE online.  For the uninitiated, it is a daily word guessing game where you have to try to guess the word in 6 or less tries.

https://www.powerlanguage.co.uk/wordle/

This, from Wikipedia, explains the game:

Every day, a five-letter word is chosen which players aim to guess within six tries. After every guess, each letter is marked as either green, yellow or gray: green indicates that letter is correct and in the correct position, yellow means it is in the answer but not in the right position, while gray indicates it is not in the answer at all. The game has a "hard mode" option, which requires players to include letters marked as green and yellow in subsequent guesses. The daily word is the same for everyone. The game also has a dark mode as well as a high-contrast theme for colourblind accessibility, which changes the color scheme from green and yellow to orange and blue.

This abc news story has some tips for playing:

https://www.abc.net.au/news/2022-01-26/why-wordle-has-become-a-new-online-obsession/100782794

I have found that most that most days I can get the daily word in 5 tries or less (mostly 5 though).  Interestingly, there is a spinoff of WORDLE called LEWDLE, where the words are lewd, or naughty, words.  I have better success with LEWDLE than I do with WORDLE . . . getting the word in just 2 or 3 attempts.  Not sure what that says about my private school education 🤣

Just scraped in under 60 on this one.

Spoiler
15 ex.jpgI didn't get that far down until I was faced with multiple choices, or that is how it felt.
#7 pouch/couch/vouch
#5 pluck/cluck/fluff/bluff
#4 budge/fudge at first then purge/curve
#1 woozy, boozy/goody/goofy. Boozy run away favourite though.

So I used pricy as eliminator and it was good till the end, when I thought juror would be it. Wrong.

Again, I didn’t manage to post my Wordle, etc., for yesterday. As usual, they’re saved in my Notes app.

Here they are in this post and following two posts… Then I’ll tackle today’s.

Yesterday’s

Wordle 1,610 3/6

🟨

🟩

🟩🟩🟩🟩🟩

The eliminator thankfully reduced the possibilities to two.

🟩 SHINY <- eliminator

🟩🟩🟩🟩🟩 CLUNG 🎯

Just a yellow C - not terribly encouraging. But by virtue of the C being definitely not in 4th position, it was actually a surprisingly small pool of possibilities! I’d say around 60-65.

It wasn’t strictly logical to use shiny as the eliminator. There were better words I could have used. But I went with a combination of gut instinct and logic.

alien

The trouble then was the position of the i, it cuts out a lot of possibilities so I decided to be strategic. Well, try to, in any case.

I was thinking words such as devil, bilge, field, liege. The trouble was the placement of the i & e.

A 2/4 pattern? An ie pattern? a 2/5 pattern?

I went for fudgy as my second word.

Then devil.

At that point, I was wondering if I should have just gone with shout for second eliminator.

My next  guess was tilde and at last I had a green.

But field and yield were not possible, otherwise I can promise you I would have preferred them over wield.

A few traps in this game. So much depends on when you can solve different words.
I was lucky in that I tried crimp for #2, rather than crick, simply as it exposed more letters.
I thought cower would be it for #8, on the basis the V was out of contention.
Had I guessed #4 before that, I would have avoided that trap, but at the time, I was thinking maybe refer for #4.
Realistically, this was about as good as I was ever going to do.

ex.pngThis wasn't too bad. I did wonder if #7 might be spick but spicy seemed more likely.
I jumped in confidently with piper for #5, but looking at it now, it could have been riper or viper. So that was lucky. But I was feeling piper.
PS or wiper! I don't know why I jumped in so quickly with piper but I think it was because I saw the P.

I so badly wanted to give a helpful vote to your  “absolute pain” list… as it made me laugh.

Here’s my Wordle for today. I got caught up in trying to help a client, and I’m wrung out now.

It could have been field or yield. I don’t think I could have narrowed it down any further than this at row 2; the eliminator was the most efficient I could use.

I essayed a guess (50/50) for the second row, and had another 50/50 on row 7 (but I didn’t think the 2nd possibility was as likely as my choice).

It was mainly the final word that could have brought me down - another of those could-be-this, could-be-that dilemmas (1 in 3 chance of getting it right).
