WALEED ALY GRILLED MALCOLM TURNBULL OVER DOMESTIC VIOLENCE FUNDING

Waleed Aly's blistering editorial on the level of funding and attention the Government pays to the prevention and support of Domestic Violence in Australia was a sobering and extremely important in-depth look at the issue - the likes of which is rarely seen on Australian broadcast television, much less the free-to-air networks.

Not content to simply file the report and move on with the regular to-ings and fro-ings of the show, Aly continued his push on the subject on The Project last night, grilling Communications MinisterMalcolm Turnbull in the Liberal MPs post-Budget appearance.

Mr Aly lists his religion as sunni muslim.

The Qur'an:

Qur'an (4:34) - "Men are the maintainers of women because Allah has made some of them to excel others and because they spend out of their property; the good women are therefore obedient, guarding the unseen as Allah has guarded; and (as to) those on whose part you fear desertion, admonish them, and leave them alone in the sleeping-places and beat them; then if they obey you, do not seek a way against them; surely Allah is High, Great." Contemporary translations sometimes water down this word, but it is the same one used in verse 8:12 and clearly means 'to strike'.

Qur'an (38:44) - "And take in your hand a green branch and beat her with it, and do not break your oath..."  Allah telling Job to beat his wife

Next week The Project will feature a special studio guest. Ivan Milat will talk about his intention to start up a company that takes back-packers on guided tours of the Bangalo State Forest.

The Torah  also precribes violence against women if the circumstances warrant it (e.g. Leviticus 9 If a priest's daughter defiles herself by promiscuity, she defiles her father; she must be burned up." ) It is is the primary scripture of the faith of Judaism  It is the single most important reference for all matters of faith, social practice, the contemplation of law and the understanding of the Divine. It is also a direct link to Judaism's beloved prophet, Moses, the man who both received as well as first disseminated the holy message of the text.

Would you argue that this makes it offensive for anyone of the Jewish faith to speak out against violence towards women?

Who are we talking about here? Which prominent Jew has a guest spot on The Project? Steve Price perhaps? Carrie Bickmore? Name the person/s you are referring to please.

not on The Project, but there are some Jewish people who have a voice in politics

Federal politicians Michael Danby, Mark Dreyfus and Josh Frydenberg and political advisers Ian Davidoff and Michael Kapel

In Australia, as we are a democratic country, followers of all religions have a voice  You can't say that because you follow a 'certain' religion that you cannot have an opinion or that an opinion doesn't count Our country doesn't work like that

luna-2304, I think I can rely on you to vouch for the fact that I have never run to the mods sobbing about the fact that someone called me a racist or bigot etc. When people use those words they must tell people who care because I don't. Opinions without supporting facts may well be the very apotheosis of a.....BIGOT. Wouldn't that be funny.

Thanks for your timely reminder about offensive material. Broaching a subject that to others is unpalatable is not offensive. It comes under the heading of freedom of speech.

There are also other responsibilities that come with the freedom of speech we enjoy in Australia......
