WALEED ALY GRILLED MALCOLM TURNBULL OVER DOMESTIC VIOLENCE FUNDING

Waleed Aly's blistering editorial on the level of funding and attention the Government pays to the prevention and support of Domestic Violence in Australia was a sobering and extremely important in-depth look at the issue - the likes of which is rarely seen on Australian broadcast television, much less the free-to-air networks.

Not content to simply file the report and move on with the regular to-ings and fro-ings of the show, Aly continued his push on the subject on The Project last night, grilling Communications MinisterMalcolm Turnbull in the Liberal MPs post-Budget appearance.

Mr Aly lists his religion as sunni muslim.

The Qur'an:

Qur'an (4:34) - "Men are the maintainers of women because Allah has made some of them to excel others and because they spend out of their property; the good women are therefore obedient, guarding the unseen as Allah has guarded; and (as to) those on whose part you fear desertion, admonish them, and leave them alone in the sleeping-places and beat them; then if they obey you, do not seek a way against them; surely Allah is High, Great." Contemporary translations sometimes water down this word, but it is the same one used in verse 8:12 and clearly means 'to strike'.

Qur'an (38:44) - "And take in your hand a green branch and beat her with it, and do not break your oath..."  Allah telling Job to beat his wife

Next week The Project will feature a special studio guest. Ivan Milat will talk about his intention to start up a company that takes back-packers on guided tours of the Bangalo State Forest.

Waleed Aly is the best thing that has happened to the Project show in years.  Top notch.

Wait until Ivan Milat starts to drag in the viewers. I bet you'll become a big fan of Ivan as well.

Why add irrelevant nonsense as if it's part of the story?

Waleed's religion has nothing to do with his comments on The Project, nor is Milat relevant.

It's rather offensive to even compare an interview about domestic violence with Milat.

As Bob Dylan sang, "God said "Abraham, kill me a son...". I'm  sure we could find violent and disturbing passages in many ancient religious tracts which don't reflect the views and actions of modern day followers.

Rather than getting stuck into Waleed, let's take a look at the interiew in question:

I have to say, this is a masterful performance by Malcolm Turnbull. When asked about the $30 million committed to tackling domestic violence (a modest sum in comparison to, say, the $1.3 billion for anti-terrorist measures) Malcolm manages to duck and weave, to divert, to call upon others to do their bit, to sound movingly sincere, to praise Waleed, to do absolutely anything but answer the question while still managing to remain on topic.

To top off this Oscar-worthy performance, he managed to keep the onslaught going long enough for the interviewers to run out of time.

Typical Turnbull interview.  He always talks over everyone who dares to ask him the tough questions and relies on the touch of humour thrown in to get away with it.

The Prime Minister said this and that.

The Prime Minister lists his religion as "Roman Catholic".

Ever seen that written?
