Bridget, a radiology student who has recently returned from volunteer work at a Cambodian orphanage and Frances, who is studying design, say they reflect their parents but their views are divergent to their conservative, Catholic father.

That they can (or want to) up sticks and move to Canberra "until they get married". Don't they have jobs or study or something that might keep them in Sydney?
Bit weird.

Kirribilli House is not in Canberra.

I was wondering the same thing during the election.

When he was on the news last night being given a tour of The Lodge by Rudd he said, when asked if the girls would be living there, something along the lines of yes, because they want to live at home until they get married.
I'd want to stay at Kirribilli too given the choice LOL

OK, I didn't see that. (He had said that he would live at Kirribilli even after The Lodge was repaired).
Back to the 1950s. I wonder if his daughters would say the same, or if that is just what he wants.

I thought the 2 younger girls were students?
We have a whole generation of young people still living at home, I don't see a problem with them staying home. Ours all left for jobs or uni but I would have loved them to live at home.
Of course, several of them came home with spouses and children for a time 🙂 while building homes.

Anyway, regardless of where they are living, what do they do? I only ask because we heard a lot (and someone here has just reminded me) about what Tim Matheison "didn't" do. I wonder now if the same scrutiny will apply to all the new residents of The Lodge/Kirribilli?

No of course there's nothing wrong with adult children living at home. It just sounded a bit retro saying they'd be there until they get married. Kind of like they are chattels to be passed on.

Kevin Rudd flew to Canberra on Thursday to hand over the keys to The Lodge and asked Prime Minister-elect Tony Abbott if his daughters planned to live at the official residence.
"The short answer is yes, because they don't want to leave home," Mr Abbott replied.
Mr Rudd quipped: "I know that feeling".
Mr Abbott's eldest daughter Louise lives in Switzerland with her boyfriend Stefano. (works for the UN)
His youngest daughters Frances and Bridget live at home in Sydney, where they are studying and are likely to remain based.
Have you seen the condition The Lodge is in? How did they allow it to get so bad?
