Is telling girls not to drink excessively or not to dress too scantily to avoid being vulnerable targets to predators/opportunist "victim blaming"?

What are your thoughts on your question?

How about telling men not to drink excessively amd stop running around with their shirts off.
Are men that uncivilized and have no control over them selves that they have to blame women for the way they dress, does that make men the weaker sex ???
There you go Bob

To some people it possibly is, but on the other hand, some things are just cautions, as in 'be careful'.
Same as if you advised someone not to walk through a particular area at night.
Victim blaming (to me) is more when you blame someone after an event.
For example, if you said, well, it was their fault they were mugged, they should not have been walking through there at night. Or 'serve her right for being raped, she was wearing a short frock'.
I think we see it sometimes on ebay too, as in "Got ripped off? Totally your fault, you bought from China (or you bought from a seller with bad feedback etc).
There's a line-to me the difference is it is perfectly reasonable to say some behaviours are plain foolish. But the blame for bad or criminal actions needs to be placed squarely on the perpetrators.

An example of victim blaming is taking place right now. While Australia is under threat from China, the Labor Party is blaming Morrison. They are blaming him because he called for a coronavus inquiry, which angered the Chinese. If the Chinese are smart, they will side with the Labor Party in their condemnation of the Australian Government and use the Labor Party's words against us. Perhaps some people disagree and view China as the victim?

There is a difference between teaching girls that drinking too much, and ending up passed out in the gutter is not a good idea, and telling girl who was raped that it is her fault. Being raped is NEVER the woman's fault. Rapists are criminals. That is something that boys have to learn; if you force woman to have sex with you, you are a criminal. Even if she is a sex worker or stripper, and behaves in sexual/flirty way, does not mean that a man can demand sex with her.

However, I do not like when girls are told that they have undeniable right to walk in a park or deserted streets in the middle of the night. The problem is there always be criminals of various kinds, including rapists, and we all lock our houses, and cars to prevent being burgled. Our freedom is limited by what risks we are prepared to take. I hate wearing helmets, but if I ride without one I risk fine or having my scull cracked.
Actually, I overheard from the next room the other day, somebody interviewed on TV, how getting covid is partially our fault. Apparently it is a responsibility of each of us to protect ourselves with mask, keep social distance and washing out hands. And the interviewer did not pick him up on the little fact, that masks protect us only little bit, and it is the other person's mask that protects us. There was also something that we should pay for the vaccine.....
Why do we have to blame somebody for everything? The simple fact is that "bad things happen" that's life, or you could say "good things just happen". There is no need to attribute everything to somebody.

I am not surprised China was not happy with Morrison calling for the covid inquiry. Basically he jumped on the Trump bandwagon blaming China. They were in midst of unprecedented disaster, with large parts of their country locked down, their economy stopped. They were working 24/7 trying to work out what is happening, to develop vaccine, find treatment. What could inquiry achieve? What would visit to the Wuhan market achieve? It was closed down and disinfected. What would going to the research facility achieve? Would you want to examine every petri dish to make sure they are not breeding covid?
The Chinese were insulted, and even Trump turned down his language. There is a time to call out countries on their behavior, but there is also diplomacy needed to deal with huge country, which takes 40% of our exports; that is 40% of our export income. It will not be easy to replace that. Just in time when we desperately need that income. Interestingly, we never criticize the USA does not matter what they do.

Calling for that enquiry ws a pointless exerise. It wasn't going to help us learn more about the virus, it wasn't going to help us control it, and it was calculated to offend China.
Standing up to a school bully is commendable, but poking him in the eye with a sharp stick for no other reason than to ingratiate yourself with his rival is just plain stupid.

Exactly.
He's the best leader the Liberals have had for a while but some of the things he does (bringing coal into parliament, over the top reaction to the Christine Holgate watches saga and the way he called for that enquiry into Covid-19) just beggar belief.
