There are approx 100,000 homeless people in Aust, yet the liberal gov wants to spent 100 million dollars on a prebicite re gay marriage    .... Surely this money could be used ( better spent ) providing a home for our homeless?

When it comes to same-sex marriage, not all views deserve respect

What worries me in this vote is that people will probably vote yes, or a majority will, because the view will be adults should be able to choose what they wish to do.

That's fine.

But I have read (don't know how true it is) that if it is passed, there will be no protection for religious institutions to refuse to marry gays.

In my opinion gays should be allowed to have a legal union, one where their superannuation goes to a partner and so on. They should be allowed to marry with a civil celebrant.

But if a religious person or a church does not believe in gay marriage, it should not be at risk of being sued if it refuses to marry a gay couple. Those people should have their right to choose, too.

i also dont think anyone should be 'forced' to marry same sex couples.

but my thought would be why would anyone want to be married by someone that objects to marrying them?

i'm sure there will be ministers who dont wish to marry same sex couple as i also believe there will be many who are quite happy to perform the ceremony. i may be wrong but thats my thoughts.

also i'm sure there would be some celebrants who dont want to marry same sex couples.

to me it would be a case to find the person the couple feel comfortable with, in or out of church.

Given the number of gay clergy I have met,  I wouldn't think they would have a prob  performing a marriage ceremony for a gay cpl.

What cracks me up is how the RC and the Anglican churches are  ( on the whole ) against gay marriage, yet are only too happy to have them as clergy.

The religious freedom being touted as a reason for voting no is  the same religious freedom that means women living in Midalnd WA cannot  seek abortions or even contraception advice at their local  public (I.e. taxpayer funded) hospital, because the contract to build and run it was awarded to a St John Of God Health Care which refuses to provide this service.

I had thought we had separated church & state.

As a public institution should not all medical requirements be met.

Did we have a say when John Howard changed the Marriage Act specifically to  prevent same sex couples from marrying?

Of course it should, I think it's scandalous

But my point here is that if a religous organisation can legally  refuse to provide  a service in a public hospital on religious grounds, rthen I cant see how they'd run into problems refusing to provide one in a church.

And given the number who have been rather fond of youngsters of the same sex, you'd think they would have no problem blessing consenting adults of the same sex.
