This is not true.  The same was said of heroin years ago, that was not true either.

probably create treatment programs that the addicts won't ever bother to use to help themselves.

The injecting room gets used doesn't it?

that isn't a treatment program

yes im wondering what sort of rehab treatment program treats the patient with the dog that bit them

Methadone.

that is not a rehab program

it is an alternative to using illegal heroin. it just holds them

more for society than the individual.. to get them off the streets doing illegal activities.. of course this is vicious cycle, its worse get clean from methadone, and boy have i seen the effects of it! and even though theyre on a meth program the desire to use heroin is still so strong, they'll still go out and score

Signatures suck.

That is because there is no rehab program offered with methadone for the most part.

For those with some rehab and a reducing dose of methadone there has been far greater success.  But you don't hear about that because ex addicts don't make the news for giving up and getting on with life.

A reprieve, but only for 12 months. This Govt is very fickle isn't it?

As mentioned before in this thread - Govt cuts funding to drug and alcohol centres around the country (since back-flipped on that last month)

This month

Mr Abbott was in Sydney on Wednesday to announce the formation of a national ice taskforce to look at how combat the drug, which the prime minister labels "pernicious and evil".

How much do these 'taskforces' cost?

31 March

Drug and alcohol centres around the country have won a last-minute reprieve from Federal Government funding cuts after an outcry from health groups.

Assistant Minister for Health Fiona Nash said alcohol and drug treatment organisations that receive funding from the Government will have their arrangements extended until June 30 next year.

The ABC highlighted the plight of rehabilitation centre staff dealing with patients struggling with drugs su..., while facing no guarantees of funding after June 30 this year.

I don't know anybody who has jumped off a bridge either, but I know from experts what happens when they do.

The trouble with misinformation about drugs which is passed on to schoolchildren is that they know that it is wrong, so they dismiss the parts of the lecture which are true.

There are so many legal drugs that are addictive and harmful I personally don't care if someone uses an illegal drug as some of the legal ones are just as bad or worse. Addiction is quite fascinating in itself. Some people can use heroin as a recreational drug and it does not ruin their lives, others can be addicted to food and eat themselves to death. I know for myself I can smoke 20 cigarettes a day and give it up instantly. I can choose to take it up again full knowing that I will give it away again. Same with alcohol.

Spot on.  My class had the very first drug education class in the country.  They provided us with a handy pocket sized text book that turned out to have the lowest return rate of any of the book hire books, ever.

The messages were so conflicting that they were completely lost.  We had some nice healthy people with good jobs attend to tell us how bad drugs were and to tell us not to follow in their footsteps because we'd die.  But there they were looking like mighty fine young specimens in their twenties, with mighty fine careers.

The first thing half the class did was find some of the evil weed to try.
