Can someone please suggest the easiest route to get from Melbourne (actually our car hire pickup is on Bridge Rd, Richmond) to LORNE?
As we are lifting a gent who may require regular stops for "comfort breaks" I need a route that has the max number of convenient stopping points (and if someone could suggest where those stopping points might be, say at least three)
This will be our first time driving from Melbourne City (we are from Syd) so unfamiliar with the routes etc
Thanks for the help

We would go Geelong Rd ( Princes Hwy )....... There are stops such as service stations withbreakfast, some fast food outlets such as McDonalds etc.

a quick look at google maps tells me the only way to get there is Via the GOR
Melbourne
Geelong
Tourque
Anglesea
Aireys inlet
Lorne
longest non stop run is to Geelong a whole 8o km on a freeway that also has well posted what they call service centers (petrol stations) that have toilets and food.
The remaining towns you actually drive through with out detouring.
Angelsea as you come in over the bridge there is a park on the left with public toilets and some benches to have something to eat.
Aireys inlet I wouldn't plan on stopping there as it has very little
So my plan would be a stop at geelong, 82km then Anglesea 42km via Tourquay, then Lorne 30km
The last 30km will be the slowest
if you can bypass Geelong and Tourque you will save a lot of time
watch the speed cameras on the freeway they are on nearly every overhead bridge and a few other hidy places

Okay here is a link where you can plan your rest stops
http://www.racv.com.au/wps/wcm/connect/Internet/Primary/travel/before+you+go/plan+your+rest+stops/plan+your+rest+stops
LINK TO NATIONAL PUBLIC TOILET MAP
http://www.toiletmap.gov.au/default.aspx
hope this helps... I am on fluid tablets so I always have to know where a toilet is
so I can sympathize. The great ocean road is not too bad, I have stopped at many
toilets along there.
happy traveling 🙂

oh and you can put the second link on your phone too
🙂
The maps are good...they invite you to browse toilets in any area
doesnt sound too good but hey its helpful.
The National Public Toilet Map is also available for Apple's iPhone. Just go to the App Store on your iPhone or use iTunes to download the National Public Toilet Map App. It's free.

Thanks all
The RACV "plan your rest stops" seems a useful resource but there are 12 highway choices. Which one should I choose?
Also: Someone has suggested a stop at "Little River" which doesn't seem too far out of Melb
I guess my concern is to have a a stop as soon as poss out of the Melb CBD as I know that it always takes longer to actually get OUT of the city. And being unfamiliar with Melb may mean taking even longer. Once on the freeway I guess it isn't too hard to pull into a town if necess as I imagine that the towns aren't too far from ea other. And of course the going is quicker too once you're out of the city
My friend would feel better if he knew that say within 1/2 hour of leaving Melb he would be able to have his first rest stop
