I heard people were getting charged because the limit changed.
From what I read on my itinerary it is 10kg carry on.

They are pretty tough about it too. Last flight I caught was delayed because the flight attendants sent a large group off because they felt their carry on was too big and heavy.
10 kilos isn't much. Older style carry on bags might be 5 kilos alone. A pair of shoes ca be close to 1kilo.
I always wear as much as I can can on Jetstar.

I bought soft bags that weigh a few grams, for that very reason. Unfortunately, my OH left one in Tassie ๐

Yes, it has changed, the limits are mentioned above ๐
It can be worth investing in a small, wheeled suitcase labelled as domestic cabin size, which are also quite lightweight. The modern cases have a weight label and have been designed to fit as cabin bags for domestic or international.
I bought one to go overseas, which weighed 2.2 kilos on its own, and was suitable for domestic flights. On sale for 55$ at a store that specialised in travel goods. In the end I used it as check-in and carried a DJs overnight bag I bought on eBay for 10$. That weighed 600 grams and was very roomy. But the plus of a small suitcase is it is easy to move about, has compartments and is lockable.

If they say 10kgs, that is what it is.
wear one of these if you think you'll go over http://www.ausbt.com.au/37-pocket-cabin-baggage-coat-evades-7kg-limit

For people that are travelling alot, especially overseas on budget airlines.. one of those barrel canvas bags are good, because they don't weigh much themselves. They are awkward to carry around but lightweight.
Overseas budget airlines are very strict with weight & size of carry on luggage. You can only carry one item (handbag, coat, carry bag is 3 things). Have to stuff handbag in carry bag and wear your coat through checkin and to board the plane.

All airlines have been cracking down on people laden down like camels. Best to read the restrictions a day or two before the flight, too, to see if there are any changes at the last minute (there can be, for security reasons).
I quite like the barrel bags, too. But for long trips find I need something with compartments. The DJs bag I took overseas as cabin luggage was a squat barrel, so flat based which was good.
