This is not so much a sad song but kind of fitting...though I think think they need to only apply 'when all hope is gone' as the chorus suggests.

I first heard this when I arrived for piano lessons one day and my teacher was playing it. I said I liked it so she got me the score, well I lasted several bars and lost interest, it was too slow and my fingers tended to race a bit in those days. I still have the score, still can't get past the first bars.
French music of the 19th and early 20th century was always whimsical sounding.
