What was it like in the 50's?

I keep hearing that Abbott wants to take us back to the 50's but I wasn't born then.

I just want to prepare myself for what it might be like under an Abbott LNP Government.

I appreciate your input Cat Happy

Women were expected to stop working when they got married, they could not get a mortgage on their own.  Yes there was contraception but only available to married women.  Single mums were often forced to give up their babies for adoption.  There was only white bread.  Evening meal was usually a chop & 3 veg, or shepherds pie.  Shops were opened 9-6 (?) Monday - Friday, and Saturday midday, everything was closed on Sunday.  Pubs had to stop serving alcohol at 6 pm until the 1960s when it was extended till 10pm, and women had to drink only in the "Ladies Lounge".

Don't agree about the bread.  We had only wholemeal bread.

The postman delivered twice a day and on Saturday morning.

In NZ in the 60s (which was probably about that same as Australia in the 50s LOL) I used to beg to have brown bread, but we weren't allowed.  I had the impression it was considered a bit common Woman Surprised

Where did you live?  Even in the 60s I remember only white Tip Top in our supermarket, but you could get some more 'exotic' breads in the deli in Kings Cross.

I grew up in Brisbane, and we ate only healthy food (as did most people then}.  It was real wholemeal bread, not white bread with food colouring in it which, I think, came a lot later and is still around today.  And it was often home-made.
