What would you do if your dog went blind

I am sitting here looking at my dog laying on her cushion where she spends most of her time now.

Honey is 16 going on 17 and has been with me since she was 6 weeks old.

On Tuesday I took her for her booster parvo and her regular eye check. The vet said that her eyesight is now gone. She may see bright light but that is all. She is almost deaf also. Her general health is that of a healthy 10 year old even her teeth.

She still takes herself out to the toilet, comes for a pat, wags her tail and seems to be happy.

Last night I was talking to my son on the phone and he said "Mum what are you doing she lives in a silent dark world".

So now I wonder what am I doing. Is it for her, or is it for me that I have not contemplated her last journey to the vet.

What would you do.

Thats what my son said also.

And I would not either, but she doesn't have chores to do and people to do things for. Is it the same or different for them I wonder. It is a pity we can't ask them what they want.

Channy, as long as she's not in pain (which she wouldn't be from being blind or deaf), I would not have her put down.  She still knows you're there and you can still love her and cuddle her.  I'm a big sook when it comes to animals but know that as soon as the animal is in pain, then it's time.  I personally don't think it's Honey's time.

I went through this 18 months ago my old Bluey girl was going on 17 too. she was nearly totally blind and completely deaf. She would not get out of her bed other than to go to the toilet and eat. she was starting to stumble when walking so I did the kind thing and had her put down. It was the hardest thing, she had also been with me since 6 weeks old the same as you.

We lost our little dog last year, I'm pretty sure she was almost completely blind and her hearing was pretty ordinary for at least the last year or so of her life. But she was happy and healthy otherwise and could easily get around the house and yard. She still bounced around like an excited puppy anytime one of us walked through the door. I would never have considered having her put down just because of failing sight or hearing, not unless it was obviously affecting her.

I would not put her down either. Her sense of smell allows her to 'see' things that we cannot. If she were ill or in pain, then different story.

I don't have dogs but I have a cat that is 17 in November and have had her since she was 8 weeks, she is nearly blind and deaf and I would not think of having her pts just because of this. She has learnt to find her way around the house without a problem and can still jump on the sofa for a snuggle if i tap it so she can feel the vibrations, and she can find her litter box and food without a problem. Remember animals have a very good sense of smell and they learn to use this even more when sight or hearing or both go. Animals are much better at adaption then we humans are.

get her a seeing eye dog

Smiley LOL

sorry, that was the first thing that popped iin to my head when I read the title.

I'm sure Honey can still see and hear in her dreams, and most old dogs spend the majority of their time snoozing.
