does it hurt?

crikey - another thing it is natural for chooks to do is have dust baths.. not possible in a cage.

Ok, you made me laugh, so I'm happy to think that the hen is happy.
(BUT, as it is blue, I still reckon it's a boy LOL)

How would we know? It is natural for hens to lay eggs. Eggs are nice oval shapes.
they're actually squishy when they come out, they only harden up once they get exposed to air,.
did you know that lots of things have to come out of the same place that the egg comes out of?
and egg shells are porous!
But it's natural for women to give birth and that still hurts.
I wonder if chickens can experience some of the same complications as women do with the whole getting that huge thing out of their bodies?

Let me ask you this, Crikey. Does it hurt you to have BM? This will answer your original question.
Eggs come out of chooks' bottoms.

gosh, now I am thinking of all those caged hens and how their cages get stacked on top of one another. (I think I read it here on cs)
You'd want to be on the top story, eh? I mean, if you were on the bottom story and the chickens above you had to umm, well, you know...
- LOL - they could fit those little sun visors to the chickens on the lower levels so that it didn't get on their heads or in their eyes.

Women give birth to babies with arms and legs, butts and big heads,, not really comparable to an oval egg (which you claim are not hard but squishy when the come out).
Personally, I don't like eating eggs, usually buy them to bake with not eat as poached, boiled etc eggs. I think it is a bit weird to eat eggs from hens, and drink cows milk (desigmed for calves).

everything comes out of there! (in a chicken) and an egg is a bit differently shaped to THAT! It's a whole lot fatter!

I like eggs, I use a lot of eggs.
but this is the first time I have ever thought about a chicken's feelings or if it actually hurts them to lay an egg LOL
I still reckon though that suffering is suffering. I don't think it makes it any better to eat eggs from a particular kind of chicken just cos it suffers less than another one (based on a human's perception)
so I think that if we are really serious about our concerns for the chickens then we all need to keep our own chickens, get friendly with a local farmer etc who does the whole egg thing the natural way or abstain from eggs.

If everyone keeps their own chickens ...we put egg farmers out of jobs AND risk hard to control/monitor biosecurity hazards.

It is unlikely it hurts them................ the opening is known as a vent..........for egg laying and waste elimination but there is a dividing flap (called a cloaca), so they cannot do both at once.
