Budget 2013 $10bn squandered: Tony Abbott unveils book of Labor waste

TONY Abbott will sharpen his attack on Labor's spending record today by warning of $10 billion in government waste as he prepares for a budget reply speech that promises to tighten outlays.

The Opposition Leader is taking his message directly to voters with a booklet listing 60 cases where taxpayers' cash has been squandered on programs ranging from union favours to excess travel and perks.

The argument is central to a Coalition campaign that rejects Wayne Swan's claims of tax revenue "write-downs" by pointing instead to missed opportunities to adjust spending to more straitened times.

Opposition Treasury spokesman Joe Hockey vowed yesterday to bring spending under control with an extensive audit of the "structure of government" if the Coalition were to win the election.

Mr Abbott's new attack rests on a series of claims about money wasted on needless programs, such as $3 million given to green groups and $8.5m spent on advertisements for the Schoolkids' Bonus, which is automatically paid into bank accounts.

Who are they targeting?

The Federal Opposition has sought to increase pressure on the Government ahead of tomorrow's budget, releasing an updated version of a booklet targeting "waste and mismanagement" under Labor.

However, Opposition Leader Tony Abbott has deflected questions about how a Coalition government would tackle cuts in the same areas.:^O

LL: "not really, the howard government is recognised by independant experts from ratings agencies as the most wasteful australian government ever."

Meaning they spent money they actually had, how irresponsible, and then to highlight that they were not very good at "profligate" spending, they handed over to the ALP a  $20 billion surplus and no net debt. The ALP soon rectified that "mistake"

Alan Kohler
"The timing of Kevin Rudd’s moment in 2007 and Julia Gillard’s in 2010 means that the number 200,000,000,000 will be hung around the party’s neck like a dead albatross for a generation. That’s the aggregate budget deficit that will have been incurred by the ALP between 2007 and 2013. It’s an unhappily round number."
