Who is afraid of Dying/Death?.....*taboo subject yeah?

I'm not but read in local newspaper yesterday that a Clinical Psychologist and a meditation teacher are opening a 'Death Cafe' for informal forums and cups of tea's to look at how an understanding of death can bring richness to life.

....the gathering will look at end-of-life options, grieving for loved ones, meditation and emotional and legal issues associated with death......The more aware we are of death and it is going to happen to all of us, it makes life more imminent and in a way that is what this whole movement is about.......though people talk a lot more freely nowadays about childbirth and sex, death is still very much brushed over......The idea is that it is an informal gathering where people can come to talk about any aspect of conscious living and dying that interests them.

All wrapped up in a 3 hour session.

Thoughts?

There was a piece on Death Cafe's on television last night - I think in The 7.30 Report - then lo and behold I open the local paper and discover they are going to run one down here.

I agree, death is the last taboo and we need to be a lot more comfortable and upfront in talking about it., but I'm not sure I'm not sure how effectve dedicated discussion groups are going to be in changing things.

I remember Billy  Connoly, in one of his shows, making a scathing attack on euphemistic epitaphs. '"Asleep."? I don't think so -  he's effing dead!'

well, I guess talking about it is a good start and more importantly being given 'permission' to talk about this issue is perhaps the confidence many with the need to talk now have IMO

Some time ago on the CS there were numerous threads about dying and VE.

The support for the OPTION of VE was overwhelming, but with respect for other posters' views..

I wonder if the mods will let us talk about it some more.

I am not afraid of death but am totally unnerved and terrified about being alive.

Will they take my organs for donation while I am still alive?

Will I be buried alive because some doctor made a mistake in declaring me dead?

Will I still be able to breath if I get caught up in a robbbery and they wrap gaffer tape around my mouth, (I get a lot of hayfever).

And so on, and on, and on ,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,
