First-up is Jacob Langston (Landon Giminez), an eight-year-old boy who suddenly wakes up in a rice field in China after drowning in Arcadia thirty-two years earlier.
Immigration agent J Martin Bellamy (Epps) returns the boy to dumbfounded parents Henry and Lucille Langston (Kurtwood Smith and Frances Fisher).
That sets off a chain of events which leads Bellamy to try and unravel a mystery that seems to defy logic.

I hope it doesn't turn out like lost like Lost.

I thought about downloading the book The Returned by Jason Mott, but after reading some of the reader reviews, I don't think I'll bother. I've sort of lost interest in the show now too. I guess the script writers would add to to the stroyline though to keep the audience interested.
I think I watched 2 seasons of Lost, then gave up, it just seemed to go on and on without going anywhere or making any sense.
Hubby didnt understand the "whats red and green" line either. I got it, as I found it ridiculously funny back when it was a new joke. (small things amuse me)

One question: when the boy ran through the woods and went to the tree with hole in it, and retrieved his toy, wrapped in a cloth - what sort of tree was it?
.... obviously one that hadn't grown much in the last 32 years .................. think about it.

Some trees don't grow much in 32 years 😄
Where did the old guy come from? Was he a resurrected person also?

yes, he died when his daughter was 19 yrs old.
The daughter is the friend of the doctor who also happens to be the baby left in the carriage of the Aunt who drowned at the same time that Jacob did

there's a conflict of stories there, isn't there?
Jacob said he fell in trying to save aunty barbara.
everyone else says it was the other way round.
Could it have been a murder?
Didn't the dad say he saw a man near the river bank?

The boy said he saw a man at the river bank - from the fleeting glimpse the TV showed, it looked like he had her by the hand and then let her go. The boy also said that the man he saw was in the photo in their loungeroom. That man, was evidently sleeping with the woman who drowned or so the father told the policemen (his brother). It definately could have been murder. As far as the story about who fell in first and who tried to rescue whom - no doubt it was always assumed that the lady jumped in to save the boy instead of the other way around - or, that story was instigated by 'the man' to cover his tracks.
