Who's been to Bangkok?

I'm going there in June, just a very fleeting visit, only 4 days.

What are the best things to see and do?

Who's been to Bangkok?

Years ago.

Went to the floating markets.

Snake farm.

Temple of Dawn.

Roof top bar.

And perhaps book a day with a guide.

(most memorable, meeting a baby elephant)

Thanks kopehagen, floating markets sounds interesting. I was thinking a day with a guide would be a good idea.

Who's been to Bangkok?

I've been a few times.

My advice, try to get off the tourist routes and discover things for yourself. Ask hotel staff where to shop. They know the cheap places. Better still, if you can use one of them for your guide, they will get you Thai price wherever you go, and will really appreciate the money you pay them as they are appallingly paid. Use the Sky train. It is so ridiculously cheap and spotlessly clean. Use the green taxis and make sure they put on the meter.

MBK is worth a look for the sheer size of it. It's a shopping centre and can be accessed by sky train. You will pay more for things there though. It still looks cheap to us. Women's clothes are more difficult to buy than men's. Mainly because of size. They think a size 12 is enormous. Keep your mouth shut in the shower. You don't need to get sick. If you are staying in more modest accommodation, head to a 5 star hotel for the buffet breakfast. They are mind boggling and cheap. Pay as you go. You'll be so full you won't be looking for any food till dinner.

Learn at least a few Thai words before you go. It is appreciated. Women say 'ka' like we would say thanks. Men say krub. Don't even think of stopping a stray bank note with your foot. It is a heinous offence to put your foot on the image of the king.

Do see some of the seedy nightlife. Just a wander near the precincts. It's an experience. Above all, have fun.

I have been a few times, one memorable experience with my husband in patpong road, we went into one of the bars where the girls were doing their tricks, they seated us next to another Australian couple, one of them exclaimed "you don't get this in the RSL at home" Cat Surprised

I enjoyed going on the river and trying all the beautiful fruits most of all.

Who's been to Bangkok?

thanks guys. Keeping my mouth shut in the shower is good advice, I hadnt considered that.

I think I'll be staying here  http://www.ssiphotelthailand.com/gallery.php  it has excellent reviews and being just hubby and I we dont need resort facilties, pools etc. Breakfasts are included. It does seem a bit further away from some things, but I prefer the quiet.

I dont think I'll be visiting Patpong Rd, seeing those girls being preyed upon by sleazy foreigners upsets me, I feel a bit the same about their zoos so I wont being visiting those either.

The place I want to stay is quite close to the river so I expect to be travelling along there a bit. I'm pretty sure we get served an assorment of fruits for breakfast, some from their own garden. Sounds lovely.

Patpong is worth a look. And the night markets are there, so you really should go. Handbags, watches and shoes abound.
