Reading the political threads (nothing mostly apart from whining about the other side) on here makes me not want to vote.
Initially the Australian Electoral Commission will write to all apparent non-voters requesting that they either provide a reason for their failure to vote or pay a $20 penalty.
$20 isn't much. For our local council elections the fine for not voting was $50+.

i copped one years ago for not voting at a council election, but i refused to pay. the electoral commission didn't like my excuse (impending childbirth) they sent me reminder notices for a long while which i ignored as well. eventually they gave up.

I am voting for a local member.
Those of you that dont or dont want to vote. just go on voting day and get your name crossed off, then you wont get a fine.
I know of many people that do that.

Actually getting your name crossed off the list is compulsory. Once you get your voting papers you can do what you like with them.

i will vote and i will vote for whover i think will do us the least harm.
That's it.

Not voting for either...will probably draw an leprechaun riding a unicorn on my ballot paper.
Something about voting for 'who is worst' that bugs me..
I will definitely not be voting for Danny Nalliah's (Christian evangelist pastor of CATCH THE FIRE MINISTERIES who believes the Black Saturday bushfires occured due to abortions)
lunatic party 'RISE UP'

Sorry, voting for who will likely be the least worst.
on 16-02-2013 04:19 AM
I would vote for the party who has the guts to bring in non compulsory voting
...why? then we wouldn't have all the asses voting who don't give a rats about who governs our country or where our country is heading.
on 16-02-2013 04:31 AM
Well, it's compulsory, but you can always pay the fine and not vote...
Yes my eyes glaze over too 😞
You only need to make sure your name is crossed off.
