Why would any young person do this?

Work for Abbotts "Green Army" for $10 an hour when the minimum youth wage in Australia is around $18 an hour?

Ohh boo **bleep**ing hoo, the government is offering a payed training opportunity that doesn't guarantee a job at the end, well **bleep** me if that's a criteria not have it or not fund it , then we better shut down all university courses , let's face it there is a big swag of graduates who never get employment or ever use there degrees. The I'm entitled generation and their do gooder parents need to wake up to reality the jobs are drying up all the stimulus packages did was delay the inventible

Okay. I am hearing your opinion. I don't have any boxes of tissues though! sorry.

It's not about 'funding'

It's about job creation.

Reintroducing slave labour does not count.

Where is the job creation????

Gotta lol at "delay the inventible". Sorry, but that was FUNNY.

I don't really have a problem with the idea of "work for the dole" or "green army". Where I do have a problem is when the schemes either consist of "make work" which teaches nothing and gives participants the reverse of self-esteem, or where the participants are doing work that would normally be paid for at award rates.

Since when do Uni students pull weeds as part of any degree??

The Govt don't pay Uni students $10-16 p.h for 38 hours a week.

The uni students pay fees to the Govt to go towards the total cost of their tertiary education.

Not comparable to the Green Army participants.

Free Trade Agreements are not free......these are costing Australia at least 750,000 jobs IMO.

If cheap carp from overseas was made more difficult to purchase and procure and Australian manufacturers offered incentives.....this would start the ball rolling in products

Then same should be done to address the services basket. e.g. in IT

WHAT jobs and careers (skilled AND unskilled, VET or ATAR orientated qualifications) are we as parents supposed to encourage our kids to go into- when the Australian govt is guilty of NOT creating jobs......but guilty of slashing and cutting ?

This whole Budget AND Govt stinks.

If you work in a low income area the government can help you relocate YAY!!!!!

Trouble being, rent in a low income area is a quarter of the rent in a city, so unless you can guarantee finding a job, you will be in dire straights within the first month of your FREE relocation.

Increase the retirement age - what a fantastic idea -

and then tell the youngsters they need to get a job for at least 6 months a year, coz there will be no unemployment for the other six months - good luck with savings kid's, and good luck mum and dad who are trying to support them.

Make 'em look for 40 jobs a month OR ELSE - yep that'll do it, scare tactics and frighteners always open up employment opportunitys.

Nothing makes you look for a job more than the thought of starving to death - but oh wait - all those jobs are being done by 65 year olds who can't retire till they nearly drop dead.

There is no solution, and the sooner the government acknowledges that and tries to find alternatives the better off we will all be.

yes whenever i hear of someone suffering from low self esteem, i immediately think......they should go and do some very low paid work with no real job prospects at the end, what could be better than that.

Well said and so true, bottom line is the socialists/left hate the thought of work, welfare is far better in their world....

The left  hate this fact..... Its higher than the Newstart or Youth Allowance rate and it's in line with trainee wages.

These kids are getting paid and getting training

I have no idea at all why so many  on here are so upset and carrying on so much as this is voluntary and people who want  learn and get some money can choose to join this scheme

NO one is being forced into it...

I suggest that the people complaining so much on here read the below links and facts sheets and get informed.

http://www.environment.gov.au/land/publications/green-army-participants-fact-sheet

The Green Army is a voluntary programme for 17-24 year olds interested in protecting their local environment.

The Green Army provides young people with skills, training and experience to improve their future career prospects while participating in projects that generate real and lasting benefits for the environment.
