Wind turbine syndrome

Interesting facts:

"In a peer-reviewed paper of mine to be published shortly, I conducted an historical audit of all known health and noise complaints made about Australia’s 51 wind farms from 1993 to 2012. Using four sources (wind company records, submissions made to three parliamentary enquiries, local media monitoring records and court affidavits) I calculated the number of complainants around Australia.

More than two-thirds of Australian wind farms including more than half of those with large turbines have never received a single complaint. Two whole states – Western Australia and Tasmania – have seen no complaints.

Almost all (98%) of complainants made their first complaint after 2009 when anti wind farm groups began to add health concerns to their wider opposition. In the preceding years, health or noise complaints were rare despite large and small-turbine wind farms having operated for many years."

Wind turbine syndrome

The noise is awful and I know I could not live near them. A friend and I took a drive through western Victoria. She loved them and thought she could easily live  there. To me they looked so graceful while driving along and sitting in the car but once we stopped  the noise made me feel ill. I will admit my hearing is very good and I do hear what some others can't.

Anything that makes a soft buzz etc irritates me including the lovely new humidifier that my daughter gave me 😞 Loud noises are fine eg, grandies lol

So she ele are you suggesting I have a mental illness? 🙂

Are you suggesting that you are suffering from wind turbine syndrome, or only that you believe you might do so if you lived near one?

I guess I would suffer from a breakdown if I had to live near one....the noise would drive me mad 🙂

Have you ever sat near them?

TS: "I guess I would suffer from a breakdown if I had to live near one....the noise would drive me mad"

Guessing is not a convincing scientific argument TS.

The facts: In July 2010, the National Health and Medical Research Council reviewed the literature and found  that there is currently no published scientific evidence to positively link wind turbines with adverse health effects.

Reviews of the scientific literature have found that wind turbines cause no ill health effects. Health effects that are reported are consistent with stress and further studies have shown that there is a correlation between these adverse impacts and exposure to negative health information about wind turbines

A study by University of Sydney’s Professor Simon Chapman shows health complaints in Australia were rare until reports emerged about the purported health risks of living close to wind farms.

It is all in your head (imagination) and not your ears.

and so on....One study says "There is no hint of any effect on a population basis for an increased use of sleeping pills or blood pressure or cardiovascular medications whatsoever"

Surely that's not the only thing he looked for? Headaches seem to be the main complaint yet he doesn't mention headaches at all?

Dr Nina Pierpont, a leading New York paediatrician, has been studying the symptoms displayed by people living near wind turbines in the US, the UK, Italy, Ireland and Canada for more than five years. Her findings have led her to confirm what she has identified as a new health risk, wind turbine syndrome (WTS). This is the disruption or abnormal stimulation of the inner ear's vestibular system by turbine infrasound and low-frequency noise, the most distinctive feature of which is a group of symptoms which she calls visceral vibratory vestibular disturbance, or VVVD. They cause problems ranging from internal pulsation, quivering, nervousness, fear, a compulsion to flee, chest tightness and tachycardia – increased heart rate. Turbine noise can also trigger nightmares and other disorders in children as well as harm cognitive development in the young, she claims. However, Dr Pierpont also makes it clear that not all people living close to turbines are susceptible.

In the UK, Dr Christopher Hanning, founder of the British Sleep Society, who has also backed her research, said: "Dr Pierpont's detailed recording of the harm caused by wind turbine noise will lay firm foundations for future research.

Yes, there is a wind farm near Esperance that I have visited. I guess if you lived right underneath or beside one the noise might be a bit unsettling, but as far as I know they don't build them on suburban streets or even in the middle of country towns. The one at Esperance is a long way from any houses.

I can't recall where we saw one on a roof in suburbia, but when we drove around there certainly were houses close by.

I'm not sure on the legal requirements as far as distance from buildings but I hope they are nothing like these.

And what happens when they fall! Glad that wasn't close to a house.

They work the same way 🙂

I know that you believe you understand what you think I said, but I'm not sure you realize that what you heard is not what I meant.

we have wind turbines in germany for many years, it's well known that there are problems with that.

it's not only the noise it's also the reflecting light rais from the blades  that drives people crazy.

i don't understand why the wheel has to be invented anew here....it's all known, for years lol

they put them out onto shallow seabeds now, away from civilisation.

they are good things, but they shouldn't be around where people live.

there is so much nothingness here...why not put them there?
