Wireless networks rise as threat to NBN

When I talked earlier about the NBN as the Labor party has it not being the best idea and that wireless will be more a part of peoples lives I was howled down by some people...

I have always thought that a more in depth study needed to be done to make sure that the billions we spend now was invested in the best possible way to make sure that we got the best value for every dollar.... I was also howled down for that opinion....

now look..

THE company building the National Broadband Network, already under fire for running late, has admitted it faces rising competition from wireless networks offering improved services and prices.

NBN Co has conceded its own modelling finds that if it increases prices by the maximum it expects to be allowed by regulators, the number of wireless-only premises will rise to 30 per cent by 2039-40 because affordability is such a significant factor for households.

Now a senior NBN Co executive has said: "NBN Co faces competition from wireless networks that are increasing in capability over time, subject to significant economies of scale and scope (and therefore, decreasing cost per gigabyte delivered), and are expected to offer a potential substitute for NBN Co's voice-only and entry-level voice and broadband services."

This part of the article was more frightening... a government agency trying to control and silence another business???

Underlining the threat from wireless, the NBN Co had tried to put a clause in its multi-billion-dollar agreement with Telstra that would stop the telco from promoting wireless internet as a substitute for the NBN for two decades.

The NBN Co asked Optus to sign a similar clause that it would not criticise the NBN for 15 years when marketing its own wireless data services in areas where it will migrate hybrid fibre-coaxial cable customers on to the NBN. But the NBN Co was forced to back down on the "anti-sledging" clauses in the deals with Telstra and Optus after pressure from the ACCC.

I have only posted part of the article... here is the link to the rest...

I thought this was interesting.

20 March 2013

Apple co-founder and former Steve Jobs confidante Steve Wozniak is well on his way to becoming a permanent dinky-di Aussie.

Wozniak today spoke to Gizmodo and said he is in the process of completing the paperwork for a permanent move to Australia, a plan he originally spoke about while down under last year.

In September Wozniak told the Australian Financial Review the national broadband network was one of the reasons he wanted to become a citizen, and that he had spoken to Stephen Conroy.

“I support it very much. It’s one of the reasons why I actually like this country and want to become a citizen," he said.

"I live in a country where we don’t have any regulation of telecommunications.”

One advantage the NBN holds, despite initial top speeds of 100mbps is consistency, as wireless network speeds currently fluctuate depending on how many users are on the network.

This is a  good point. I currently have wireless broadband and it is hopeless due to congestion.

This area also has a lot of people coming and going (holiday town) and in peak holiday times because of congestion I can't even open a webpage.

When the NBN rollout is complete here in a couple of months, will I stay with wireless broadband or sign up for NBN? NBN of course.]

We don't have ADSL2 at our exchange, so other options are slow and  expensive.

Well don't go posting nonsense articles.

Wireless is no threat to the NBN. Now or ever.

about 95% of all data transfer is through fixed lines.

More devices just means we're using more devices. It does not mobile wireless is stealing a larger share of the broadband market.

Oh lakeland,

   What's wrong with Simca Aronde?:

It went in the 1950's!!:^O  (Sadly I'm old enough to have seen them in realtime)

Am waiting patiently for NBN to reach the part of Ballarat where I live.

It makes no difference if a few more of the low level users go wireless because the highest plans have been taken up by twice as many people as NBN Co planned for.

The forecast expectation was for most people to opt for slower speed plans initially, which didn't happen.
