I dont follow tennis at all but it's lovely to see an outsider get a chance for a change

Maybe it's because some people can have a good day and are on form while others are having a bad day and are off form?
It's a game, where two people bat a little ball across a net and attempt to get the other player to miss.
The gambling aside, why is it that people get so worked up about (and identify so fiercely with) other people who are good players of athletic games?
It's mildly interesting and even slightly entertaining if one has nothing else to do of more import, but it comes a close second to watching to see which colour of paint dries faster (in my opinion).
