can't get the image out of my head

this morning the car in front of me hit a possum.

they didn't stop.

i saw it run from the side of the road onto the road and into the path of the car. the other driver wasn't at fault was nothing they could have done.

at first i thought it was a rabbit.

but when i reached where it was i saw it was a possum.

i stopped and got out. it was still alive but very badly injured.

i did what needed to be done, i won't describe how here.

but i can still see it

possums are one of my favorite animals, have quite a few friends with bushland acerage where they come out to visit.

Good on you for preventing it's suffering.

They say when an animal or human is shocked/surprised, endorphines are released and not much is felt for a good 15-20 mins, so there is solace in knowing it wouldn't have known or felt much.

Nature seems to be so perfect.

I'm glad you were able to help it Mr Grizz.  I don't think I would have been strong enough to do the same.

I have noticed a lot of wildlife on the side of the roads recently where I travel.  I do wonder sometimes because these are not busy roads and I sometimes feel that the driver hasn't really tried to avoid hitting them.

Grizz,, did this happen in daylight?  If so the possum may have been sick or injured  as they are settled down in their drays long  before the sun comes up.

I am so grateful to you for end its suffering. It is such a painful thing to do, but your compassion overcame your personal pain.

mr grizz thankyou for stopping and putting the poor possum out of its misery. It is never a nice thing to, but thankyou for doing it.

I once stopped to help a lady who hit a kangaroo. I pulled it off of the road, unfortunately it was still alive with mortal head injuries. I wasn't able to put it out of its misery and I couldn't find anyone to, though I was offered a pocket knife (I refused). I did stay with it until it died, and made sure it didn't have any babies
