I have a generator - 15 years old but not used very much - Honda motor. I haven't started it in 5 years but with the expected cyclone conditions and power outs, I thought I may at least be able to keep the fridge/freezer going so as not to lose food again.
Can't start it! Checked Oil levels, filled with petrol, checked plug, put new air filter in - tried starting with choke, without choke, 1/2 choke etc - nothing. It turns over but not firing. Yes, I have the power switch on and the fuel switch on.
Any suggestions from the small engine experts?
TIA

generally, not being in use for such a long time, the carberator would need cleaned and adjusted. also look for evidence of mice chewing on the wiring. hope this helps, i'd say it would have to be one or both of those i mention.

A good reminder to check your "GO" or "Bug out" bag and related items - batteries etc on a yearly basis.
Including of course the Generator
Re Batteries, I have been switching over from odds and sods / an assortment of Alkaline, cheap Rechargeables
to having enough AA and AAA Panasonic Eneloops to last a while plus a few good but cheap lights, on top of
my more expensive torches.
Panasonic Eneloops are well worth looking at for your kit. Slightly more expensive than normal rechargeables
but the low self discharge aspect gives peace of mind that they will still have a charge after a few years IF you
forget to check them.

mechanical or electrical--just your past history .lol.
I noticed earlier in this thread you have purchased ..a little red racer..
You have mentioned getting a project car to "do up"
Why am i scared............................................................Richo.
Just because I ask a few questions, please don't assume for one moment that I am a total idiot.
You don't have to be scared about me 'doing up' a pre computer type car. I have rebuilt 186 engines, gearboxes, diffs - exchanged many heads, camshafts, lifters, carby set, extractors, etc. I used to drag an HR Holden in late 60's- quite successfully did my own mechanical work - not electrical. HR Holden - all you need is a 1/2", 9/16" spanner and you can do almost anything
My little red racer with it's computer technology is a different matter - I have everything done by a mechanic - well, I'm going to spray the front and back bumpers - and Yes I have sprayed several cars, guitars etc before - admittedly not with 2-paks etc.
The main reason I do not do eg suspension and brakes work myself is that my hands won't allow me too.

Sorry i hit a nerve Rabbit-you are a lot more competent than i gave you credit for.
It was that VZ thread and some things in the past.
HR Holden-they dont make good cars like that any more .sigh.
Hope your new project is a success.................................................Richo.

Rabbit
I'd still fix the generator first before the cars
And mark it on your calender to test it twice yearly so you don't get caught out again.

ahhh those were the days. My first car was a 63 austin. I learnt alot about mechanics from that bomb car.
My next car was a 69 kombi. I became rather proficient at pulling that motor out to fix something or other. I think I had it out 3 times before selling it and buying my green flower power wagon. It's computerised, and has the pollution monitoring stuff. I hate it. Spent thousands trying to find a fault, replaced lots of the doodads, turned out to be a shonky little wire somewhere.
I have no brakes atm and haven't worked out how to bleed them correctly. It's not like the old holdens that's for sure.

It was 67 - 74 that I worked on cars - was always hotting something up, changing stuff just for the sake of it - experimenting with diff ratios, carby combinations. As a matter of fact, on my wedding day, I was under my HR Wagon putting a 336 diff in - my brother was showered, dressed and yelling at me to hurry up. In retrospect, I wish the car had fallen on me
Since then - I have had mostly company cars so didn't even lift a bonnet for 25 years. Got lazy I guess, and forgot whatever I knew - or was too lazy to think about it - and now, I'm too old to worry or at least I thought I was until about18 months ago, a mate took me to a car show - seems I got the bug again.
Having said that, since I bought the 'red racer' everything seems to have gone wrong that placed demands on money that (I have been told) I could have spent more wisely. Ah! Well! Chit happens.

also, forgot about doing the Torana up - we had it since new 6 cyl - in (1991?) I had an engine built 308 - all the best internals to make it strong - I put the engine in with a 4bl Holley, extractors etc - was scared to hit it too hard - was going to put a better diff in but didn't get the chance - Mrs took it shopping (against my wishes) and got it stolen. So, $11,500 down the tube - in 91 that was a lot of money.
