I suspect he doesn't mean the bible God or he has never read the bible. I can see why Ian didn't come out earlier if his family is so religious.

Bravo to Ian's father for saying that he loves his son unconditionally. 

He is a deeply religious man, and he will have to sort out the conflicts he now has between what the bible says, and the information his son has announced to the world. Bravo to both of them. 

There are ways for deeply religious people to love God, and their gay children. I've seen it many times.

On the new this morning they said acceptance of gay marriage in Australia has soared since Ian came out, so maybe there was some sort of motivation or agenda for Ian to make it official.

BTW, Ian didn't exactly say he's gay. He's not straight can mean a lot of things.
