Unfair or not, what happens if a woman takes maternity leave and then decides not to go back to work? Does she have to repay the money?
I just quit my job yonks ago when it was nearly time for the baby to arrive.

If you take your holidays and resign when you get back, should you repay the holiday pay?

Well no, but you earned your holidays while you were at work. Hopefully you didn't earn your pregnancy at work.
I'm not knocking maternity leave. I just wonder whether many women find that they prefer to stay at home and raise their children rather than paying a whole heap of their salary to childcare.
Times have really changed and now it seems like stay at home mums are frowned upon.
When I had my kids it was the other way around and seriously, I don't think we had things any tougher with only one wage.
Everything is so much more expensive now including rent. Home ownership is simply unaffordable for many young families so it's work work work and line someone elses pockets to look after your kids. Fine if you have grandma to do the job.
I would love things to go back to affordable living so that women had a fairer choice because maternity leave is such short term assistance.

I was working at a huge Steelworks Company in Germany when I expected my first child in 1954. I got paid six weeks wages before the birth and six weeks after, under the condition that I return to work.
In 1956 I was expecting my second child and was not going to return to work after the birth, so I got only paid six weeks wages before the birth.
That was the law then. Don't know if it is still the same?
Baby Bonus is ridiculous in my opinion. Why should the Government pay women to have children? The money would be better spent by helping employers to pay Maternity leave and help women to return to work.

Do you think employers are obligated to provide materinity leave as you say as an assistance? Why?

Gee Bob, If a company or employer offers it, why not take it? They obviously value their employees to offer such benifits, and that unborn child could be yet another valued employee years down the road. Far as unfair, what in this world is fair? It's unfair that only around half the worlds population get the ability to have a baby, meaning experance pregnancy, and that fact far overshadows any paid leave.
Shall I go into how unfair it is when cops who murder, rape, rob and abuse their undeserving victims gets paid leave?
