Try and employ a family member under any type of centrelink (government) subsidy..... it is not allowed
However if you are the terasurer then it is kocher to pay a rent (government) subsidy to your wife because...wait for it....

Not really. Joe did what he said he'd do. And I'm sure the government has more pressing and real issues at the moment than gay marriage and tampon tax.

Just because gay marriage is not an important concern to you doesn't mean it is not important. It is of utmost importance to couples that are treated unfairly and excluded from rights and benefits that everyone else has.

Joono, just because it's of utmost importantce to same-sex couples doesn't mean it's important on the scale of real world life and death issues.
Like the ppl who are being beheaded in the middle east by ISIS, some of whom are Aussies and their children.
LIke our farmers who are being driven off their land, many also being driven to suicide by Banks, mining incursions and drought.
People in Australia on the poverty line who are trying to live on $18 a day.
Think they might be shaking their heads wondering how men marrying men and women marrying women, or tax on tampons can dominate news headlines for days?
How d'you think they feel about fellow Australians and governments turning their backs on them while celebrating their first world causes?
It's not about rights and benefits. As of 2009 same-sex couples already enjoy the same rights and benefits as everyone else has.

I dunno, it's up to each person to decide what is important to them and they don't have to be gay themselves to feel strongly about it or rank it highly on their list of important issues.
There was a story last week about a couple going to NZ to marry because one has only a limited time to live before dying from a terminal illness. To them the ability to marry was their highest priority.
It might not be yours or mine but for some it is the most important issue.
The backs have already been turned on those living below the poverty line. They're attacked on an almost daily basis by the govt and their fans, they're demonised for their misfortune regularly. Why the sudden concern?

Is this government so useless it can only focus on one issue at a time?
The role of a government is to govern over a broad range of issues affecting ALL Australians.
There are no priorities regardless of the whether the topic is poverty or drought or paid parental leave or national security or same sex marriage - it is ALL important and it should ALL be addressed by government. That is their job.

Thing is, it very much looks like, according to the news headlines, the twin causes celebre of same-sex marriage and tampon tax have taken top priority.

You are quite right Icy. Let's just worry about death cults and terror threats. Not our real lives.

You surely cannot be suggesting that our current government is run according to the dictates of news headlines?
