I think you have misread my post. I was asking you if you knew the male equivalent, not suggesting that the male equivalent was 'david'. Proof of this is that I used all lower case in my question. Had I wanted to suggest a name it would have been:

what is the male equivalent . . . David?

I know it is only a small difference, but the capital makes all the difference!  Here on the boards people have shortened your ID to 'david' and not 'David'.

More and more I am wondering if I am in the right country and speaking the right language.."english", which makes less and less sense to me as the years go on. The language I grew up with has virtually disappeared, being replaced by abbreviations, and wrong descriptions (eg. girls are not "guys") or at least we knew the difference once upon a time. Now this, anything that sports "heros" (another misplaced misused word) say is then repeated as new slang across the nation. People don't know the difference between "say" and "go" often using "he goes" instead of  "he Says"   The word "go" always meant "depart" to me. Growing up in an era when media was controlled from using bad language and bad english, and schools insisted on correct english being taught and used I really don't have any desire to learn boganspeak, and find it quite annoying to see society going downhill and becoming feral. Ug Ug will be the only way to go in the future. It is frustrating to try to make sense of what people are talking about these days and they are supposedly speaking English. Throw in all the ums and ahs, and the "yeah right" that seems to be a Queensland thing, and I am one very confused person. End of rant, I feel better now.

The downhill slide started with textspeak.

Young people know nothing but abbreviations and shortcuts.

Too bad about us oldies who were taught the Queen's English without shortcuts.

I remember a few years back there were a number of members came to the boards who asked their questions in textspeak.  The oldies had very little idea what the problem was so just did not answer until the question was reposted in proper English.

I've noticed the pronounciation of some words has changed too.  God knows why but I suppose there is some daft reason for it.

"Gotten' is now so commmonplace here (groan) I expect it will have to be taught in schools.

My brother loves textspeak - he says it is the future of English.  The rest of us think he likes it because he can't spell. 🙂

I belong to a scifi forum where members are expected to post legible messages.  Yes, the core members are not young.  Still, there are some younger scifi fans who join.  One young guy posted his first message in a mixture of textspeak and bad spelling.  The moderator immediately contacted him about it (it was in the rules which I'm guessing he didn't bother to read).  He shot back with a message full of swear words and the statement, "It's allowed on the XXX Forum."  I think that was his last post - the moderator removed him from the group.  On matters like this she takes no prisoners. 😉

'of' instead of 'have'. As in "I should of..."

'Loose' for 'lose'

'Effect' for 'affect'

Spelling, a lack of punctuation, paragraphs, grammar.
