Choose and Change (New Game)

Let's try this new game... 🙂

You have a word and have to write a sentence with an antonym of this word (it must not be a perfect antonym/opposite). The sentence must contain at least three other words (not including articles, pronouns etc.)

The next poster then chooses a word from the sentence of the previous poster (not the antonym, any other word) and builds a new sentence with the antonym of the word he or she has chosen.

For example:

START - She finished her delicious meal in no time.

The antonym of "start" is "finish/finished", so the next poster has to choose between "delicious", "meal" and "time" (the antonym can't be used) and has to write a sentence with the antonym of the chosen word and with at least three other nouns.

SAFE - Steve had a reputation for wildly reckless behaviour, so Miss Tompkins was not surprised to see that it was indeed Steve - white-faced and grimly hanging on with the tips of his fingers to the edge of the sloping roof - who had occasioned the panicked calls for help by the other boys staring up at what might at any moment turn into tragedy… if she couldn’t get the wretched miscreant down safely.

TRAGEDY - It had been a really impossible week at work, and she had been looking forward to watching a light-hearted comedy, but her other half insisted that the latest horror movie was the only thing worth viewing.

WATCHING - Stella was so annoyed by her boyfriend’s late and intoxicated arrival (due to having a few drinks with some chance-met school mates after work) that she spent the entire evening ignoring his drunken antics and inappropriate jokes.

ARRIVAL - Due to the late departure of her evening train, she arrived home extremely frazzled, and was greeted by her very hungry teenage children, who were waiting impatiently for their dinner (which they were well and truly old enough to have cooked themselves).

FRAZZLED - Sasha Poplov had perfected his way with cocktails while working part-time during taking his First at Oxford, so he laughingly agreed to prepare some secret and delicious concoctions guaranteed to make exhausted guests invigorated.

FIRST - His initial reaction was to leave them alone, but he worried that their disagreement would become physical, so he tried to calm the situation, which led to his final thought - why did I bother.

BOTHER - Aunt Mabel took a plump jam-and-cream daubed scone from the plate and bit into it with pleasure, mumbling as she ate, “You’re such a comfort to me, dear - mmm, such excellent scones, [mumble mumble] [glff] tea?”

MUMBLING - So that she could be sure he understood her firm refusal, she made sure that every word she spoke was clearly enunciated, and easily able to be comprehended by even the most misogynistic dolt.

FIRM - Miss Oatsham regarded the ingratiating young man at her front door with a catechising expression, and told him, “My good fellow, I do not need my trees lopped, and I am in no danger of being fined by the council (of which I happen to be mayor), and even if I did need any tree lopping, I would be dealing only with my regular tree surgeon, not with a Johnnie-come-lately fly-by-night itinerant self-styled man-of-all-jobs who turns up at my front door!”

DANGER - Being of a nervous disposition, Felicity Filmore rarely left the safety of her own home without checking the weather forecast, the traffic report, and the police radio (which she hacked into for her own peace of mind).
