YOUTH - The police let Grace and her visitors know in addition that there was currently a wave of youth crime in the neighbourhood; “The two gentlemen who presented themselves as tradesmen and then vandalised your car aren’t part of that scene, but the end result can be the same - so you should keep doors and windows locked and your car in the garage .”

SALIVATING - In fact, the dogs were salivating, but Grace didn’t want her two lovely boys to be loaded up with salt and the nitty gritties of processed food, so she ordered a chicken burger for them (and was cross with herself for being a little bit hypocritical - since she was eating a Quarter Pounder herself!).

GHOST - The next day was drenched with sullen rain while a cruel wind relentlessly clawed through the neighbourhood, whistling and moaning like an old-fashioned ghost - and Bailey howled like a contrapuntal chorister as Rufus raced from room to room in an unsettled manner.

SPRINGING - Although Grace was quick, the dogs were even more quickly springing towards those tempting bulbs, and she said firmly “Stop!”, watching as Rufus instantly gave a little leap in the air before skidding to a stop; Bailey wasn’t quite so sure, and he wanted to sniff the roses before deciding not to play with them.
