why do I have to be sent a PIN to my phone number when listing an item to sell?

When listing an item to sell it tells me it has sent a PIN to my phone number. I dont recieve the PIN.

I look in my account settings to check the phone number, I find it under Site map/My account/change registration information and it wants a landline area code (brackets) and landline. Do I have to give a landline? You cant send a PIN to a landline anyway.

Then it gives a second field for mobile and after entering it in this, it does not retain my number after logging back in. Arrghh! Please help!
