If I didn't receive a tracking number, how can I locate my item?

I received an email at the beginning of November informing me that payment was confirmed and that my item was already posted.
The expected delivery date was between 12/11 - 15/11 and I still haven't received it.
I have an article no. but no tracking no. for Aust. Post. I'm new to eBay and unsure what is the norm/procedure once items have been purchased.
Any advice?
