the buyer has canceled the deal and wants their money back, ebay is holding the money, but the ebay system says I have to pay the buyer out of my own pocket but I do not have the funds, what happens now ?

If you don't repay the buyer then they'll probably open a dispute against you - if you still don't resolve it expect sanctions by eBay and a neg feedback from the buyer.
What was the reason they wanted to cancel ?
