Like some help learning to use Auctiva multi-variation. My variations aren't appearing in the listing. Do these only appear upon checkout?

I'm using the variation lister according to instructions (well obviously not somehow!!) and I'm not sure if the variations are supposed to be evident before the buyer commits to buying. The photos are all there but only as description shots, not as variation options - even though I've set it up to show pics both in variations and description. Any helpful pointers would be appreciated.
