I am using the automatic relist feature for the first time, which states that the item will be relisted for free up to 3 times. Does anyone know what happens after that third time if it still does not sell? Does Ebay remove the listing? Or does Ebay relist for a fourth time but charge the listing fee? Thank you

No, it simply doesn't relist and ends up in your unsold folder until you decide to relist again. It stays in unsold for 60 days.
Then when you relist, it will count as 1 against your free listings if you have those and you can tick the box again for a further 3 free auto relists. If you don't have any freebies left for the month, you will be charged for 1 list and the 3 subsequent auto relists are free.
