can I reduce the number of days I have my item listed for auction, when a bid has been put.

Hi:  I would like to decrease the number of days my item is on for auction to accommodate a bidder who would like to purchase earlier.  It is my understanding that once a bid has been put, I can't make any alterations to the listing.  Response please.
