I am a bookseller and none of my 900+ listings comply with TRS+ and never will.
My sales certainly haven't suffered. I am a TRS, but I don't believe that makes a difference.
It pays to remember that a lot of buyers DO NOT search by 'best' match. Price + postage - lowest first or ending soonest (for auctions) seem to be the common preferences.

Doesn't seem fair. I can't ever get above standard seller rating without it

well offer it and see how you go, if that concerns you.
most people except for manufacturer sealed items are in the same boat.
just remember the 30 day exchange only has to be for what the law provides - ie. not fit for intended purpose or faulty. the policy doesn't have to be unconditional. (ie change of mind)
use photos/scans of the actual book - lots if needed - describe very accurately, maybe even over emphasize any faults etc, maybe if these seller rasting carrots are that important to you, think about sealed packaging to prevent read and return
I guess it all just depends on how important the rating is to you.

Actually the new policy is unconditional return. And I do think books are different as unlike clothes toys etc they are more often only used once.
Do you known if there is a way to inititiate a request with eBay to change policy?
I note in a search that in best match (the default) overseas above standard seller's will come before local standard seller's so I think the rating can be important.
Cheers

Actually just noted your seal packaging idea. That would work thanks.
Although if anyone does known how to approach ebay for policy change i would be keen to give it a go.

top right hand corner of screen, there's a tab called "Customer Support"
In there is a "contact eBay" Tab
hover a bit and follow a few links till you find one that relates to your question and where they will ring you back inn a few minutes. (usually 3 to 5)
clarify the return policy though, cos I don't believe that an eBay policy can override the law. But maybe it can?
Also, if you wait 'till knock off time, you'll get some advice from some pretty experienced sellers including some who sell second hand books.

so go the sealed bag (cryovac packaging), and charge a restocking fee - wonder if there is a policy about that? If not I'd be making it the cost of the book.
make it clear that postage either way won't be refunded.
(just word it nicely)
but I have to say, I think you're pretty ambitious offering free post on books.... it doesn't take much for a book to get into parcel rates.

I don't think it would matter how many days was on the return. I, and most avid readers can read a book in a day. I would like to think that readers who love books, would not abuse that policy.
