Im stumped was my first non pay dispute so i contacted ebay support to help make sure i did the right thing for the item to be cancelled.
Ebay confirms i can cancel the item as seen in photographs, i cancel as out of stock
Then i notice today i have defect appeal it and get denied contact customer support and get given the most unhelpful script ive ever been presented in my life.
Just be mindful guys just because customer support assures you doesnt mean you wont still be penalised

Correct, policy states if a seller cancels with the reason out of stock, they will get a defect
If you are cancelling because a buyer did not pay, you use that as the reason, and only that reason, buyer did not pay
ebay staff type from pre written scripts, and have little to no training as far as what the policies are

Contact eBay again, admit your error, and tell them ‘buyer did not pay’
