I don't view it as a good idea. 500 characters for feedback? That is going to clog up the feedback profile pages, and I see the potential for feedback waffling. Instead of being forced to be concise, buyers will have enough room to include irrelevancies.
The 80 character limit was severe. Sometimes conveying sufficient information with that limit couldn't be done properly. However, 500 characters is far too many. If eBay were going to increase the number of characters, 100 characters for feedback would in my estimation be adequate.

I'm fine with this, in fact an increase has been needed for a long time, and I think you'll find the vast majority of buyers will still either A) leave no feedback at all, or B) be succinct.
How do I know? Etsy has an 840 character limit for reviews, so if you want to see what having enough space to actually say something substantial results in, have a peek at some shops with thousands of comments.
Yes, when someone wants to rant, it's a big, long "this person sucks because of A, B, C and then they D'ed!!!!", but that is more often a case of giving someone enough rope....IYKWIM.
Lots of people get frustrated over there because unless you're on the app (where you can leave a star rating with no words), you can't leave a review unless you also write a minimum of 5 words and most people just wanna say thanks, or some short variant thereof, so I doubt we'll start seeing novellas appear on FB pages.

Ohhh, digital*ghost... are you sure?
We won't be seeing Proustian feedback?
I hope so.

We are lucky to receive one positive feedback in 20 sales. Buyers don't bother any more and we too have stopped handing it out. Serves little purpose from a sales perspective.
On the other hand if a buyer has a bad experience and ours are generally from buyers not reading the details in the description - you are guaranteed a 100% chance of negative feedback from them...
Can't wait for my first 500 word novel ! (I think I will be waiting a very very long time for that to happen).

My jewellery store got the longest (on average) reviews, maybe 200-300 characters, but they were generally overwhelmingly positive, or if they had a minor gripe, it would still be accompanied by a high rating (there's no pos / neut / neg, just a 1-5 star rating, 1-3 is considered bad, 4-5 is good). The gripes would usually be informative via more detail as well (eg stuff like "I thought it would be X, but it's Y"), which is IMHO a lot better than only having enough room to essentially say "not what I expected".
eBay does have a bit of a different culture, so I wouldn't expect exactly the same results or behaviours here, but people are mostly the same wherever you go so I don't think they'll be vastly different, either.
You'll get people using all 500 characters here and there, I'm sure, but I think there's more good than bad to this change, even in instances where someone is going off in a negative comment (one thing I will give eBay higher marks for, is that they will more often recognise and remove feedback that contains provable lies, Etsy usually doesn't).

I have noticed that feedback has gone back to just 80 characters these last few days. The 500 character feedback was available for a few weeks, but no more.
For me, the drop in length seems to have coincided with me being signed up for Managed Payments.

Received my first negative novel this week from a buyer who purchased without reading the description. Despite accepting his return he said he was too busy to send it back, but he stuck the knife in anyway... I'll work up an 80 word response after adding him to the block list.

Could be worse.
The buyer could have reported your listings for Key Word Spamming.
Other buyers could have reported you for ignoring feedback policy.

sorry folks, my last post should be ignored.
Buyers can still leave scrollers, but sellers are limited to 80 characters. The feedback I left recently was for a buyer.
