Obviously I don't want or expect you to all give away your secrets but where did you all discovered the best way to buy your stock. There is a item that I would like to sell (the item has many different sizes and colours) but I just don't really know where to start to try and find major wholesale stockists

Before you even think about investing in stock you should test the market in whatever category you are thinking of selling in.

You need to look at what is selling well for good prices, not the things that are available for next to nothing with free post from China, you will never be able to compete with them unless you can invest vast sums of money.

If you are going to post as unregistered letters then you are going to have to build a cost into your prices to cover the occasional refund.

Getting stock is the easy part - getting good stock at a price that will allow you to make a profit after competing with the mega stores who are able to buy in huge bulk amounts, asians selling direct for almost nothing, freight costs, ebay & PP fees, taxes, postage costs and losses from fraud or damage etc that is the hard part.

Then once you have done all that, others see that you are doing well and copy you & undercut you, and then you get to start the whole process all over again. Good luck.
