How to get images to show as 140 x 140 in search results?

Hi everyone. Just wondering how to maximise the size of the images to show as their largest in search results. From reading eBay's help guides, the largest is 140 x 140 pixels. Thanks for any help.

Image size in search results is a setting that can be made/changed by those searching the site etc, and will affect all images displayed in search results.

Conduct a search, then click Customise View (top, right hand side just above the search results).

A pop-up window will appear, with the first option as formatting. In the lower right corner is image size (small, medium, large). Select large, and save/apply.

For sellers, to make full use of the gallery pic, it's recommended to have an image uploaded that is at least 1000 pixels on the longer side. I upload images that are square (eg 1000 x 1000) wherever possible, to get the full use of the image size in gallery search results.

Thanks, d*g. I probably didn't explain well enough what I meant.

In the search results where the pictures are usually a very small preview of the larger image, their maximum size can only be 140 pixels wide by 140 pixels long. Most times when editing a picture for the photo gallery and then checking it in search results, the photos will be something like 140 x 96, or 87 x 140, instead of the full length.

So, I'm just wondering if there is a way to make sure the search result pics are the largest they can be, to possible help get noticed. You may have answered my question as far as making the image squae - exactly the same length and width. So, I'll give that a go and see if it does anything.

The maximum size is 140 pixels on each dimension. So you must crop it square to fill the entire frame.

Also select "Gallery Plus" in the listing upgrades.

It's FAR easier to do all image work on your own computer. Crop your pictures to 800x800, as that is the size that eBay uses. Then upload.

As coops said, you have to make the image itself square before uploading, otherwise, if a rectangular image was uploaded it would have to be stretched out of proportion and warp the image of the item in order to fill a 140 x 140 dimension.

There are some things I list that fill out a square nicely so are very well suited to square image frames, others aren't. Usually, when I take and edit shots I make sure they're cropped square and also resize them to see what they'll look like in the gallery. If they don't look particularly good at 75 x 75 or it's too hard to see enough detail of the product, I'll crop it differently, most commonly by taker a close-up that fills a square frame but still shows enough to identify the product at a glance.

Something like a maxi dress is a total pain, because often the short side is less than half the width of the long side when it's just a full length image of the dress. In cases like that, I make a square composite of two or occasionally three pictures - one side has the full length view, the other has a close-up of the best feature or somesuch.

Apart from cropping an item that is non-square, I also tend to put the first photo in a "advertising frame"

For wide items, I have some with writing top and bottom.

For narrow items, I put text down one side.

This really makes the items stand out - a good way of showing features or benefits. For example, because I am battling to compete with all the Asian exporters, the Gallery pics on ALL my electronics listings say "Shipped From Sydney".

I have a special "master image" that has the text and photo in separate layers. So it only takes a moment to dop in the pic, resize, switch to the text layer and retype new words, then save.

You'll have to hope eBay AU doesn't bring in the US picture standards (no borders and no text allowed): http://pages.ebay.com/sellerinformation/sellingresources/picturestandards.html

Whilst we are on the subject of picture size: can anyone tell me why I can't upload an image bigger than around 400 x 400?

All my pictures have that little symbol next to them to say image not best quality, but I can't upload any bigger. To me they look OK, so I haven't worried too much.

Yeah - will be interesting to see how well that one can be "policed".

Thanks, coops and d*g.

colleen, could it be the file size is too large? Are you using the Photo Gallery upload tool via the eBay website or an app/program? They're coming out as the perfect 140 x 140 in the search results, so that's a big help at least.
