Interest for his/her auction was too low, he/she is entitled to do that but I would tell the bidder of my intention, myself with a quick courtesy email the problem with that being that eBay manipulate/control the communication between sellers and prospective buyers (they will tell you that they only offer the platform and do not intervene in our dealings !!!) , so they, eBay purely and simply prevent emails from reaching their recipients when their systems detect a number of words, digits, symbols, etc... like phone numbers, email addresses and others, so you will have to forgive your seller and blame ebay for the lack of a human dimension now on the eaBay platform, yes it is a sterile, inhuman & immoral world the world of making money at any cost.

As investorartshop said, it is because the seller was worried that they wouldn't reach a good price with the bidders they had. Not the best thing to do but sometimes it's understandable.
They have to end the listing before the final 12 hours as once that has happened they can't end it without selling to the highest bidder.
Within they last 12 hours, they can cancel all the bids but someone else can still come along and put in an even lower bid and win the auction.

Another example of eBay's limiting, controlling (notwithstanding their claim of not interferring between buyer & seller...) when ending a listing, you are offered only 4 reasons for cancelling your listing, your auction, your sale, when there are numerous other reasons a seller can encount forcing him/her to cancel their listing, NOT GOOD ENOUGH, eBay:
Reasons for ending listings early include:
The item is no longer available for sale.
There was an error in the starting price or reserve amount.
There was an error in the listing.
The item was lost or broken.

Bring back reasonable reserves maybe? You wouldn't sell a house at auction without a reserve.

Yes, thank you j*oono, why not leave the choice to the seller whether to have a reserve or not on his/her auction??? With the amount in fees sellers pay, now, what is going on, eBay?
Another limitation eBay puts on selling at auction, against all logic since all their auctions anywhere on the planet but two places have a reserve accepted by eBay! What is so different in Australia, eBay?

What other reasons would there be?
