I have bought a pirated CD through Amazon during the year. I emailed the seller and they were very apologetic, gave me a refund and let me keep the CD.

The poster is alluding to a 'special' ebay buyer that you may or may not want to put on your bbl.
I had already done so already myself .

Hi
If your products are 100% legitimate then send them a message saying something similar,
Hello, i invite you to take this product DVD set to your local Police station to have them verify its legitimacy, please supply us with a full report on the findings on a police letter head including police station and investigating officer and badge number.
If the findings prove that the product we have sold you is in any way non-legitimate (an illegal copy) then please return the product for a full refund. I will pass on this report to EBay and the Federal Police for further investigation.
Regards

That may sound as a very good advice BUT:
A - what if the buyer has pirated copy (bought elsewhere) and will take it to get it verified?
B - if pirated copy is handed over to the police they will not give it back, it will be destroyed.
Much better option would be to ask for the item to be sent back, and say that if it is pirated the OP will refund the full payment plus return postage. But they will not be able to prove if it is the one sent out.
PS
I do vaguely remember the other Amazon thread, but I also remember there was some concern about the authenticity of the DVDs.

I'm sure the local police have better things to do than verify that the Desperate Housewives DVDs are legit or copies. Who says there are officers there qualified to make such a judgement. Sorry, but I find that suggestion just so wrong.

I don't think it matters whether the item is fake or not. The buyer needs to return it before you give them a refund, especially with their nasty attitude.

If the buyer obtains a certificate that the item is fake, and proof it was destroyed, they will get a refund without sending it back. And yes, police have a duty to be interested in pirated copies; especially if they are supposedly coming from a very large company like Amazon.

My post regarding taking a set of Desperate Houswives DVDs to the local police wasn't that there shouldn't be any action, just that a local police station might not be equiped to provide the "full report on the findings on a police letter head including police station and investigating officer and badge number" that the poster suggested. They may refer the inquiry to a specialist Police unit dealing with counterfeit and fraud, one that is not at a 'local' level.
I did a quick Google search and found the following site for reporting fakes:
Australian Federation Against Copyright Theft http://www.afact.org.au/.
They have an online form for gathering information about the alledged fake including questions regarding the possibly fake item and the supplier of the item.
If the OP is selling DVDs that get shipped direct to their buyers from a supplier in the UK then they would not have even seen the DVDs that were sent. That would muddy this particular situation, including jurisdictional issues. I can't see my local (country Vic) Police station being able to investigate and provide a 'full report on the findings on a police letter head' in a timely manner involving enquiries with a UK supplier. Certainly not in a timeframe suitable to support a PayPal claim.
