According to dictionary definitions, 'brand new' is absolutely new whereas 'new' is unworn and unused.
What about an item that has been washed that is unworn and unused? New? Brand New ? or used ? could it be new if described as washed in the listing ? what if there was no used option ? is it not misleading to describe it as new (ie unused and unworn) so long as tthe fact it has been washed is included on the listing ?
If ebay intended 'new' to mean 'brand new' why haven't they adopted the wording of 'brand new' instead of 'new' on listings? This suggests that ebay does not intend new to mean 'brand new' and maintains the distinction used in everyday common language. But why would ebay not explicitly use the term 'brand new' if 'new' means 'brand new' ????
Confused 😞

For clothing, I would accept a washed, unworn item to still be considered New by eBay definitions. Aslong as it looked new and everything was still intact.
We were talking that day about what happens to all the clothing at the end of each day that has been tried on - do they get "disposed of" - and we know.
They don't, just fix them up and back on the racks with them.
Department stores would lose so much money if they simply threw out every piece of clothing that a potential buyer tries on. Most of the time, there are no noticable changes/damages after someone tries it on. You look at it anyway, before buying. Obviously, if it has a blood stain, you don't buy it. 😉
I would like to see the actual eBay pre-defined descriptions be gone and just leave the one or two word title, e.g. New, Like New, Very Good - relevant to each category. As it stands now, the descriptions are way too specific. The actual descriptions is where eBay should work on making pre-filled templates mandatory for the key areas in various categories. For CDs, they could have pre-filled condition definitions for Cover, CD surface, Artwork/Booklet. For clothes, they should probably state whether its been washed, ironed, worn, etc. Just having a blank white page leaves too much room for things to be left out and people to buy blindly, unless the photos clearly show what is not included in the text description.

agree with d*ghost, and be aware that if a category does not have a USED option then it is against ebay rules to sell that kind of garment USED.
this is particularly so in swimwear, dancewear and underwear.
I don't mean to hijack someone's thread, but I have a similar question.
I have some unworn underwear that is the wrong size, but unfortunately I removed tags and washed it before I realised, I also have some unworn but washed men's boxer shorts that my OH doesn't wear..
What would the situation be for selling these?

The problem is that once washed, it is impossible to tell whether the item was just washed or if somebody had it on for a while. I think once it is washed, it is used.
I would not risk it, the few dollars you would get for washed knickers is not worth the potential hassle.

Patchoo I am afraid you should not sell them on ebay, as others have said once an item has been washed it is sometimes impossible to tell if they were worn first or not.
I think it is counter productive anyway to list clothing as BNWOT if they have just been washed and not worn, I list them as used then n the listing I say that they have not been worn but as I have washed them I have listed them as used. I often get higher prices for them than for similar items that are new with tags.

from a personal point of view, from a buyer. I dont care if it is ebay or some other selling medium , to me brand new is not washed, infact to me i would expect brand new to be able to be returned to the shop if you had a docket.
If you accept being washed as the same as brand new, how do you differentiate between something straight from the shop with all tags and stickers on it and something apparently brand new but has been washed ?
saying all of that, to me if a seller was detailed in their description and stated that it hasnt been worn but has been washed, i dont mind .

Yes i agree with the above 🙂

My 2 cents....
I think there should be a 'new without tags / washed' option in the listings.
I have lots of unworn, but washed clothing I'd like to sell. I wash them because I know others have tried them on in the store and I squirm a tad knowing that. And who knows how many times they've been tried on. ?:|
And if I'm like that, I'm sure there would be others out there like me.

IMO I don't think it would be workable - how could any tell if the garment had been worn once or twice and then washed ??

i would trust a what a seller actually puts in a description more than just what option box is ticked, too easy to falsely upsell if all it takes it checking a box.
TBH I dont get any better prices for BNWT tags than second hand

Yes it's a matter of trust and one can only be truthful as to the condition of the clothing.
If the buyer doesn't trust the seller, then they can move onto the next listing.
If the buyer believes the seller, then great, they did a great job with a truthful description.
But we can't make anybody believe what our listings say, unfortunately. 😞
