Recently I've had a few buyers that havent paid for their item. I have opened a 'case' and been through that process but ended up closing the case because the buyer never responded and the payment was never made. I want to leave negative feedback for this buyer so that other sellers are aware. This used to be an option but now its not available. Is there anyway around this? Otherwise what is the point of having feedback?

There is no way around it, you cannot leave negative feedback for a buyer.
Your options are to do as you already appear to have done which is to open an UID and issue the non payer a strike against their name.
The point? LOLOL - there are quite a few threads around as to why buyers like their feedback, but I'm not getting into that discussion LOLOLOL

the option to leave a neg for a non payer was removed 5 or 6 YEARS ago.
now, once you close the non payer case, you get your final value fee back from ebay and the buyer gets a strike
set your preferences to block buyers/bidders with strikes and you'll help warn a lot more other sellers than a red dot on a page most sellers wouldnt see anyhow, certainly not before such a non payer bought one of their items!

I used to sell in the days when sellers could leave negs but when I was listing in auction format I had better things to do than look through the fedback of every buyer who bid on my items to see if they had what looked like justifiable negs, many of them were obviously retaliatory and no way would I not want to sell to them, and then cancel their bids thus lowering my current price so leaving a neg for a non payer would warn me of nothing, especially as most of my sales are now BIN.
A lot of sellers used to leave really nasty feedback for buyers which usually resulted in a red dot in return and made the seller look bad, now neither side can leave feedback, the buyer gets a strike and if they do it more than once you have the ability to block them.
