Why do fees get taken out on postage costs ????????????? cannot work that one out !!!!!!

The only answer is .... because eBay want to and there's nothing to stop them.
I do not intend to support, condone, or agree with the decision to charge FVF on postage, but if you try to look for justification from the eBay member's perspective, I very much doubt you'll find anything that satisfies you.

Because ebay exists for only one reason and that is to make as much as they can for their shareholders.

3 reasons.
1st > ebay CEO John Donohoe missed out on a $1Million+ salary bonus for failing to meet the yearly profit target this year.
This is also why PayPal now hold on to the base fee when you do a full refund to a buyer.
2nd > It effectively fixes the fee avoidance issue with low price/rediculous postage cost that has been a problem for the last decade.
3rd > It greatly reduces the mounting pressure from the IRS, HMCR & ATO to force ebay to collect US State taxes, VAT & GST.
