Why don't people read the listing details BEFORE bidding?

I just sold a Marquee Canopy.

In my listing, I stated (in capitals) that ONLY the canopy was for sale, not the frame etc.

A woman "watched" my listing.  Then, bid on it, and had seven days to read the listing in full.

She won the auction as she was the only bidder.

I prepared the canopy for pick up.

She did not come and pick up the canopy herself, but instead paid a cab driver to pick it up and deliver it to her place.

When he delivered it to her, she called my (provided) phone number and said that she expected the "whole marquee - poles and all".

She said my listing was "misleading" and that she will definitely leave negative feedback  😞

I asked her if she read the whole listing?  She said, "no, I didn't, I just liked the picture and assumed it was for the whole marqee".

Then she said she will apply for a refund from PayPal... and hung up on me.

Can she demand a refund when I state in my listing that only the canopy was for sale?

Will I need to dispute this with PayPal?  And, how do I go about doing that?

Any and all advice most appreciated.

Thank you.

Why don't people read the listing details BEFORE bidding?

UPDATE:

Seeing as it’s now the weekend, my husband has kindly offered to go to the buyer’s residence and pick up the canopy this afternoon - this would be a two hour round trip in Saturday traffic.

That is, if the woman will answer her phone/email and agree to it. But, with the possibility of having to return it at cost to her, she may think upon the proposal, who knows.

If so, with the canopy home and checked for damage, I could close the dispute in PayPal and press “accept refund”.

Or, do I continue to fight the dispute in the hope that I will win?

Then, there’s the matter of the negative feedback still to deal with…..

However, I’d appreciate advice on whether this is the right course to take.

Thank you to everyone who has commented here so far. It is appreciated.

Re your comment above - "in the hope that you will win"  - you will win a paypal dispute - there is no buyer protection for pick up items.

Based on what I would do, which is right for me, but may not be right for you, is to:

- Refuse the request to refund and escalate the claim to a dispute in paypals resolution centre.

- Clearly write out the reasons why you are refusing return and refund you may wish to include things like:

My listing description clearly notes that it was the canopy only for sale, and that poles and ropes were not included in the sale.

The listing clearly shows that the canopy was available for pick up only. No freight service was offered.

The Paypal user agreement clearly states that there is no buyer protection for goods that are picked up.

The canopy was picked up by a courier that was organised and paid for by the buyer.

- When you win the paypal claim you can then ring eBay and get the negative feedback and any other defects such as low DSRs removed.

When you win the paypal claim, contact eBay again and they will remove the red dot and all star ratings.

It will then be like it never happened and you will be back to 100% with no red dot.

That is why is it important to proceed with the claim and escalate it to a dispute.

EDIT: DG bet me to the post .... Cat Happy

Sadly, a LOT of buyers don't read the description. They read the title and look at the photos only. Even then, sometimes they only look at the photos.

If she opens an item not as described with PayPal, there's not a lot she can do because there is no buyer protection with pick up items. You can also prove to PayPal that your listing clearly stated it was for the canopy only. You just have to watch that she doesn't do a chargeback on her credit card if that's how she paid. If she does that and doesn't return the canopy, you should be able to report her to the police.

If she leaves negative feedback, don't reply to it, RING eBay and (calmly) tell them what happened and they will hopefully remove the feedback. If they won't, keep ringing them and ask to speak to a supivisor. Sometimes it can take a few calls to get results.

Yep, very frustrating. I don't offer pick ups (stated In my listings) as it's too hard arranging times after work with all my kids activities, basically every day after school and on weekends, plus in the past I've been left waiting over an hour or so or they don't turn up.

Then I get emails from buyers with this question " When can I pick this up?" Grrrrrrrr

Probably would be a good idea to put a photo of the canopy only in the listing, also. Best to pre-empt what buyers might think (canopy & frame both incl in sale) to avoid problems later..

The photos are supposed to depict the actual item for sale.

But what would the buyer think was for sale if all the photo showed was a heap of fabric on the ground?

In this case it would not be at all practical to show just the canopy.

Okay, the woman has halted PayPal payment and opened a dispute for a refund and citing rubbish reasons like "Miss leading pictures and small print. Not what I thought I was buying ".

Sigh 😞

So, she wants her money back - that's fine.

Do I press "Accept the refund & close the dispute" before I have my canopy returned?

She told me that it cost her $100 for the taxi to deliver it to her place - it seems highly unlikely she will send it back, at her expense.

I'm also concerned that - out of spite - she may damage my canopy in some way before/if returning it, rendering it unsellable.

So frustrating.

So she's negged you already? Geez she was quick when it only sold today according to the listing.

I looked at the ad and it clearly stated at the bottom that it was for the canopy ONLY, the frame and ropes are not included. I would definitely fight to have it removed as the listing is NOT misleading. I'm surprised she didn't demand all the other stuff in the photo too!

Give eBay a call first thing tomorrow. Ask to speak to a supervisor first up, and don't give up. Insist the defects relating to the transaction are removed too.

Why is it that that low feedback buyers are so quick to drop a negative? Some of them can't help theselves.

If eBay refuses to remove the feedback after many phone calls, I would reply to it and put her username in the reply so everyone can see who she is. Something along the lines of "<username> didn't read description and blames me for it"......or something else suitable. Just don't fly off because it makes you look bad to other potential buyers.

I could have taken a photo of a crumpled up red vinyl blob on the ground, but thought a photo of it set up in situ a better option, so that people could see what they were bidding on.

It's a lovely canopy and the photo reflects that.

Sadly, this woman lacks attention to details and blames others (me) for her own inadequecies and inability to read before buying.

I did say a photo of the canopy also (in addition to the complete set). Reason to avoid situations the OP now finds herself in.

Better to know you are going to get a pile of canvas than expect what the photo shows.
