Unfortunately, yes, unless the sale was long enough ago for the timeframe for eBay's moneyback guarantee to expire. (PayPal disputes opened after an eBay request is no longer available shouldn't result in a defect, eBay's timeframe is the last estimated date of delivery plus 30 days).

What is a defect and how is calculated?

The defect rate is the percentage of transactions that have one or more of the following transaction-related defects โ€“ the top predictors that a buyer will buy less or leave eBay altogether:

  • Detailed seller rating of 1, 2 or 3 for Item as described
  • Detailed seller rating of 1 for Postage time
  • Negative or neutral Feedback
  • Return initiated for a reason that indicates the item was not as described
  • PayPal Purchase Protection or eBay Money Back Guarantee case opened for an item not received or an item not as described (only used for US, UK and German seller standards programs)
  • Seller-cancelled transactions

A PayPal dispute isn't a return request, though.

The next point down shows that a defect is issued for a PayPal dispute, whether it's for INR or INAD, the bit in brackets seems to suggest the defect is issued regardless, but will only count in the global seller standard rating rather than the Oz one, so I guess a seller can be TRS by Australian standards but not US standards that way.

No. This buyer ordered a jacket about 2 weeks ago and never received it. I rang the courier and they had lost it so I said to the buyer I will get another one from the supplier (as he brought the last one originally). Which he was totally fine with. So sent it yesterday morning and then noticed he opened a dispute with paypal and was quite nasty about it. So I cancelled the courier and refunded. Thought I was going to get a neg and defect anyway, just didn't know if I got one from paypal aswell.

Ah... In this case, the defect will probably stick (they tend to get automatically issued, and then later removed if the circumstances warrant it, or the seller can get a CS rep to remove it).

If something like this ever happens again, the best thing to do would be to let it be delivered so that you can supply proof of postage and/or delivery, then the INR dispute can be closed in your favour, and the defect will qualify for removal.

Yeah I thought about letting it get delivered but I knew I was going to cop a neg/defect anyway, he was a nightmare from the start.......just had that feeling.
So do I get a defect for a neg and PayPal dispute or just the one? Sorry if this is a really dumb question.

only one:

There can only be one defect per transaction. For example, if a buyer opens a purchase protection request and also leaves a neutral Feedback rating on the same transaction, it will only count as one defect in total. And if eBay is asked to step in and help, and we decide the case in your favour, both the transaction defect and the neutral Feedback will be removed.

I understand why you would refund - I did something similar with an unpleasant buyer recently, though I suspect they had the item anyway.

A transaction can get multiple defects, but only one will count towards your seller standing, so if you get one from the dispute, then another one (or two, eg via neg and low ratings) from their feedback, it will still technically only count as 1 in so far as your performance rating goes (the only time multiple defects from the same buyer will count is when they're across multiple items, and ebay will still take into account how many different buyers have given defects when working out your status. For example, say you had 3 defects from 3 different buyers, then another buyer comes along and gives 3 negs for 3 different items - even though that counts as 6 individual defects, because they're from less than 5 buyers, you can't lose TRS. If one more buyer came along though, you could lose it because then they'd all be from 5 or more buyers, in that case it would depend on the overall percentage... I hope that makes sense, it can get a bit confusing when the end result depends on varying factors).
