Wise words required regarding Cancellations

After some words from those wise in the ways of eBay on a situation I've not previously dealt with (and by wise I mean wise, not wise a** but, my thanks to all potential contributors along those lines just the same Man LOL)

 

Recently listed an item for sale (used, rough condition but, running), "sold" said item, waited my obligatory 8 days to close the unpaid item case, relisted said item, sold said item, was paid, pulled it out to pack and post and found it not running.

 

Took said item to my "go to guy" who declared it deceased, expired, shed it's mechanical coil.

 

Emailed Buyer to explain situation, advised would need to cancel sale & refund in full as item no longer in working condition as advertised, submitted cancellation and now all I can find in relation to the cancellation is the generic eBbay "Yup, you cancelled this transaction, et." blurb.

 

My question is, am I expecting too much to receive an actual eBay notification that the cancellation is, in fact complete and the Buyer is aware of and has accepted the cancellation?

 

As the item has some value as parts in non-working condition I intend to relist it as such but, am hesitant to do so until the cancellation is (to my mind) wrapped up completley.

I'm not 100% sure, but I think it first depends on the reason for the cancellation. If you use the "out of stock..." option, the refund should be issued on your behalf (i.e. eBay instructs PayPal to do it), the buyer isn't asked to confirm anything, (and you get a defect). If you select the "buyer changed mind..." option, the buyer may have to confirm that they received a refund, but I don't think they're asked to agree (or decline) anymore. (only sent a few as a seller, and received none as a buyer, so I'm guessing on some things). 

 

It might count as an open request in the resolution centre, if the buyer needs to confirm, and the status should be reflected there, too, as far as I know, so if you go to the resolution centre, and it's showing there as "awaiting other member's response" or somesuch, you know the buyer needs to confirm, and if they don't, it tends to take around 10 days for the request to close.

Thanks DG, the "OOS etc." option (and precious few options there are) was what I used and refund was automatic so all good on that front.

 

Resolution Centre basically just confirms what I know so I suppose it's best guess that if the Buyer did need to accept the cancellation, they have done so.

 

Methinks I'll just belt the bust piece of kit in storage for a few weeks to make 100% certain theres nothing outstanding required to close out the case and only then list it as a parts item.

Recently had a situation where AP sent a parcel into cyberspace for a few weeks.  

 

I offered the buyer a full refund through PP, and it was agreed if it turned up he would repay me.  We didn't bother going through any cancelling sale stuff.  Saved a lot of hassle.  And now just sits in my 'sold' section with 'view PayPal Transaction' next to it.

 

Okay eBay got it's fees, PP refunded their's.
